Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated April 4, 1893, under the general railroad laws of Georgia, the purpose being to purchase the property, rights, and franchises of the Augusta, Gibson and Sandersville Railroad Company, and to be substituted for the original incorporators and stockholders thereof. The date of organization was April 18, 1893. The carrier acquired by deed dated May 1, 1893, the property, rights, and franchises of the Augusta, Gibson and Sandersville Railroad Company, conveyed by Hamilton Wilkins, receiver, in foreclosure proceedings, under a decree dated April 10, 1893, of the United States circuit court. The carrier acquired by consolidation agreement, dated February 13, 1894, the property, rights, and franchises of the Sandersville and Tennille Railroad Company. The principal office of the carrier is located at Augusta. Detailed facts as to the development of fixed physical property will be found in Appendix 2.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The railroad of the carrier, originally built in 1885 as a narrow-gauge road from Augusta to Tennille, was changed to standard gauge in 1895. Approximately 78.20 miles were acquired May 1, 1893, by purchase from the Augusta, Gibson and Sandersville Railroad Company after foreclosure sale under deed bearing the same date. The remainder of the road, about 3.30 miles, was acquired by consolidation with the Sandersville and Tennille Railroad Company under an agreement dated February 13, 1894.
