The railroad of the Atlantic, Waycross and Northern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located in the southeastern part of Georgia. The owned mileage extends in a southeasterly direction from Kingsland to St. Marys, Ga., a distance of 11.051 miles. The carrier also owns and uses 2.332 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 13.383 miles of all tracks owned.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated October 24, 1906, under the general laws of the State of Georgia, originally as The St. Marys and Kingsland Railroad Company, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from St. Marys to Kingsland, Ga. On March 6, 1911, the name of The St. Marys and Kingsland Railroad Company was changed to Atlantic, Waycross and Northern Railroad Company. Under subsequent amendments, the company was authorized to extend its road to Atlanta, Ga., and to construct a branch to the Florida State line. The date of organization of the carrier was October 27, 1906.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier extending from St. Marys to Kingsland, Ga., a distance of 11.051 miles, was all acquired by construction during the period from December, 1906, to March, 1908. The construction work was performed by numerous independent contractors.
