The railroad of Atchison Union Depot and Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, consists of tracks and structures comprising passenger terminals at Atchison, Kans., extending from Fourth Street east to the Missouri River and lying between Main Street and Utah Avenue. The depot and express buildings are the main property items and consist of brick-and-stone passenger station and office buildings and a brick express building.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated November 13, 1878, for a limited term under the general laws of Kansas. The purpose of the incorporation was to erect, maintain, and operate a union depot in the city of Atchison, and the construction of tracks to connect the depot with the several railroads entering the city. The date of organization was January 8, 1879.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The property of the carrier was acquired by construction, which was commenced in the fall of 1879 and completed and open for operation August 1, 1880. On January 6, 1888, a part of the depot building was destroyed by fire. This portion was rebuilt during 1888 and 1889 and completed and placed in operation January 1, 1890. The construction of the original property was performed by several contractors, by the forces of the tenant companies, and by the carrier's own forces. The work of rebuilding the depot was for the most part done by J. Nesbits, a contractor. The records do not disclose that any of the contractors were affiliated with the carrier.
