The railroad of the Asheville and Craggy Mountain Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located in the west-central part of North Carolina. The owned mileage extends northeasterly from Craggy to New Bridge, N. C., a distance of 2.467 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 0.286 mile. Its road thus embraces 2.753 miles of all tracks owned. In addition to the owned mileage, the carrier operates the property of Asheville Southern Railway Company, hereinafter called the Asheville Southern, extending from Craggy southeasterly to the plant of the National Casket Company.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated for a term of 99 years, by an act of the General Assembly of North Carolina, ratified March 11, 1889, for the purpose of constructing a railroad from the city of Asheville, N. C., in a northeasterly direction along the side of Town Mountain and so far toward the top of said mountain as might be considered practicable. Its charter was amended by acts which were ratified by the General Assembly of North Carolina on March 5, 1903, and February 15, 1905. These amendments granted the carrier authority, among other things, to construct telephone and telegraph lines, to own and operate mines, and to purchase or lease other companies. The carrier's principal corporate office is located at Brevard, N. C., and its accounting office at Washington, D. C. The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.
