The railroad of the Aransas Harbor Terminal Railway, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located in southeastern Texas. The main line extends from Aransas Pass on the mainland to a point at deep water on Harbor Island opposite Port Aransas, a distance of 7.154 miles. The carrier also owns 7.485 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 14.639 miles of all tracks owned and used.

The 3.2 miles of railroad, which the carrier acquired by purchase from J. P. Nelson and D. M. Picton, January 23, 1896, and which it abandoned during the year 1917, was never operated by it. However, this line was used during the years 1908 to 1910, inclusive, by The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway Company for the purpose of hauling stone for the United States Government. The carrier did not receive any rental or returns for the use of its property. The 7.154 miles of railroad constructed by the carrier has been operated by its own organization from the date of completion, August, 1912, to date of valuation.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated July 13, 1892, for a period of 50 years, under the general laws of the State of Texas, for the purpose of constructing, owning, and operating a suburban or terminal railway to extend from the town of Aransas Harbor, Tex., across Harbor Island and Turtle Cove to the jetty railway on the north end of Mustang Island, a distance of 9.75 miles. The date of organization of the carrier has not been ascertained from the records reviewed. On July 14, 1911, the charter of the carrier was amended authorizing the construction of a railroad to extend from a point at or near the intersection of its railroad with the shore line at Aransas Pass, Tex., to the excavation dump of the Aransas Pass Channel and Dock Company on the south side of that company's channel, and thence along this dump to the mouth of the channel at Aransas Harbor; also, authorizing the construction of a line on Harbor Island connecting with this railroad and extending across the channel of the Aransas Pass Channel and Dock Company to certain terminal property. The carrier acquired from J. P. Nelson and D. M. Picton certain railway property known as the Terminal Railway, together with certain other property by deed dated January 23, 1896.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, extending from a connection with the railroad of The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway Company at Aransas Pass, Tex., to deep water on Harbor Island opposite Port Aransas, Tex., a distance of 7.154 miles, was all acquired by construction during the period November, 1911, to August, 1912. The construction work was performed by forces of the company. There is a difference of 0.454 mile between the mileage, 6.7 miles, recorded by this company, and the mileage, 7.154 miles, inventoried as of date of valuation. In addition, the carrier acquired by purchase from J. P. Nelson and D. M. Picton, January 23, 1896, 3.2 miles of railroad extending from Aransas Pass, Tex., to the Morris & Cummins ship channel, which was constructed by them during the years 1895 and 1896. The 3.2 miles of railroad was abandoned during 1917.
