Category:Motorcycle speedway stubs has reached 372 and Category:Speedway biography stubs has reached 322 after sorting (only a very small proportion had any type of stub-tag at all before). I propose to split these up a little:
- Category:Motorcycle speedway stubs/{{motorcycle-speedway-stub}} - Currently 372, reduced to 24 (all venues) with the categories below
- Category:Speedway biography stubs/{{speedway-bio-stub}} 322 - reduced to cat of 221 and template usage of 155
- Category:United Kingdom speedway biography stubs/{{UK-speedway-bio-stub}} - 101
- Upmerged {{Poland-speedway-bio-stub}} - 35
- Upmerged {{Australia-speedway-bio-stub}} - 31
As before, if anyone prefers motorcycle-speedway over speedway I'm completely malleable on it. This would make Category:Motorcycle speedway stubs a little small so we could leave the team stubs upmerged to it if preferred. SeveroTC 12:47, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

British India Military Stub
[edit]The British Indian Army units were divided between the armies of India and Pakistan after 14/15 August 1947. We have stubs for {{India-mil-stub}} which was earlier used both for old British Indian Army units and present Indian Army units. The stub includes an image of the post-independence Indian army flag. Some of the British Indian Army units went to Pakistan, as such it is inappropriate to show two nation's modern army stub tags for the same unit. Before this leads to edit wars, it is proposed to create a British Indian Army stub, {{BritishIndia-mil-stub}} so that all former units of the British Indian Army would be so demarcated. This would aid Britishers and interested editors to develop these stubs seperately. The national army stub i.e. {{India-mil-stub}} or {{Pakistan-mil-stub}} would be added in addition so that stubs are appropriately grouped for convenience of editing by respective national military history task forces and interested editors.
A total of 143 stubs from 302 articles in Category:Indian military stubs would be relocated to the British India military stub, if proposal is accepted. The Brotish Indian Army units already have an article category, British Indian Army regiments which has 234 articles under it and its two subcategories. A new stub category Category:British Indian Army stubs would be created if this stub proposal is approved. AshLin (talk) 19:54, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A little rooting around in Category:Spanish composers was enough to get {{Spain-composer-stub}} over the threshhold; it should be at 60-some right now. Propose creation of {{motorcycle-speedway-stub}} - currently there are 52 articles tagged as {{motorcycle-racing-stub}} in the Category:Motorcycle speedway category tree but I suspect there are many, potentially hundreds of untagged articles (such as 1930 Star Riders' Championship, 1948 Speedway National League Division Three and similar season articles), so also propose creation of Category:Motorcycle speedway stubs as subcat of Category:Motorcycle racing stubs as and when 60 transclusions of the template is reached. SeveroTC 10:25, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Given that we already have a bio cat I see no problem with this, but do we need the "Motorcycle" in the category and template as we don't in the bio cat? Waacstats (talk) 20:55, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Support either title. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:16, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- The main category is at Category:Motorcycle speedway and the main article is at Motorcycle speedway, hence my suggestion here, but all sub-categories drop the word motorcycle (eg Category:Speedway by country). I proposed {{speedway-bio-stub}} having not realised where the main category/article were and it's in line with Category:Speedway riders (the main bio parent cat). Pro's for {{motorcycle-speedway-stub}}: main article/category and keeps in line with {{motorcycle-racing-stub}}/{{motorcycle-sport-stub}}. Pro's for {{speedway-stub}}: reflects wider Wikipedia usage. Surprisingly there is no stub template for this, despite having so many. {{Indian Given Name stub}} Connormlh (talk) 02:16, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- That would be {{India-given-name-stub}}, but we don't really have that many... Category:Given name stubs is only about a third of the way to the point where splitting it would be a priority, and a random sampling of the ones we have suggests that only about 30 are of Indian origin. Once this gets to a splittable size, it would perhaps make more sense to split into male and female names anyway. Grutness...wha? 06:51, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are currently 278 articles in the category Algae stubs. Many more algae stub articles are not tagged as stubs. The term "algae" refers to a large group of often distantly related organisms, making it unlikely that an editor would work on "algae stubs" in general. I would like to split out any large clades of stubs from the larger group to provide workable sub-categories, and to make the remainder of algae stubs a small group of organisms, even if they are unrelated.
I am beginning by cleaning up the Red Algae, and would like to move at least 37 articles from the category algae stubs to Category:Rhodophyta stubs. I would then like to create Category:Diatom-stubs.
I would like to move remove Phaeophyceae and Diatom stubs from Category:Chromalveolate stubs, currently 183 stubbed articles, a number without stub tags, to Category:Phaeophyceae stubs and Category:Diatom stubs. The Chromalveolate are a very difficult group taxonomically, and some experts in particular areas, might not be able to even recognize genera from another taxon. There are many experts in Diatoms, and having their own stub category for this taxon of tens of thousands of species would provide a looking space for experts.
In addition, there is some tagging and clean-up being done by a bot, and stub sub-categories will facilitate organizing this. --KMLP (talk) 23:27, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I have no problem with templates for all of these but we normally only create categories once they have 60 or more articles. I think if we have this many then I support categories but lets see how many we ahve. Waacstats (talk) 12:29, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- We don't have 60 in all potential stub-categories however, we have too many in the main categories for the cats themselves to have any use. Diatom specialists won't even recognize the names of water moulds, across a couple of 100 million years, and brown algae specialists seldom know much about red algae. Stubifying in a way that pulls the larger groups out of algae stubs will make it possible to fix some of the existing articles, and ask experts for pictures and editing. I don't intend to make any small stub categories, only ones where I can pull out, say 30 or more articles, for taxonomically large and specalized groups, such as diatoms, golden algae, red algae. I won't make stub templates for poorly researched or taxonomically doubtful or obscure groups, or for groups that will never have more than the dozen stubs they have now. I'll start with the ones I've suggested, then come back and post with new ideas, after I pull these into their own stub categories, so I can see what remains. --Kleopatra (talk) 05:25, 19 October 2010 (UTC) (Usurpation rocks!)[reply]

I have no opinion about the fine points of stub sorting (e.g. categories versus templates), but as for the biology, the proposed splitting out of Rhodophyta, Diatom, Phaeophyceae (brown algae) (and probably others; I'm not sure exactly how many are being proposed right now) are unproblematic in the sense that each group is reasonably large and uncontroversial in terms of where the boundaries are drawn. Kingdon (talk) 21:27, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I think just splitting out the large groups and leaving in algae stubs that will not soon be parts of large categories is okay. We'll bring down the number in the main categories, it will be easier for editors working on stubs to run through the remaining articles, and they will see that there are diatom stubs, etc., elsewhere. So, I don't see any need for a bunch of small 5 article stub categories. --Kleopatra (talk) 04:40, 21 October 2010 (UTC) (the usurper)[reply]

Surprised we don't have this; looking at Category:Airports in Suriname suggests we could get forty easy. Uploading to Category:South American airport stubs, of course - unless I find twenty-odd lurking in the underbrush unexpectedly. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:17, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oversized propose a split by decade to match US category for example {{UK-business-bio-1960s-stub}} and either Category:United Kingdom business biography, 1960s birth stubs or Category:British business biography, 1960s birth stubs whichever one wins out. Category:Turkey stubs isn't yet at the stage where it needs to be split, and there's considerable under-sorting in it, but it looks like a {{Turkey-hist-stub}} and {{Turkey-org-stub}} would both be viable - the first would have at least 50 (probably far more - the Turkish titles mean nothing to me); the second would have well over 100 - of which almost 60 would be political parties, so a {{Turkey-party-stub}} may be worthwhile as well. Grutness...wha? 00:18, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Probably worthwhile having this upmerged into Category:Disaster stubs and Category:Weather event stubs - there's at least 30 stubs that could take this template at the moment, and chances are there are many more hiding in various history stub categories.
