The one and only Stolperstein in Catalan El Palà de Torroella

Stolpersteine is the German name for stumbling blocks collocated all over Europe by German artist Gunter Demnig. They remember the fate of the victims of Nazi Germany being murdered, deported, exiled or driven to suicide. The Stolpersteine of Spain are located in four provinces of Catalonia. They were installed between 2015 and 2018.

Generally, the stumbling blocks are posed in front of the building where the victims had their last self chosen residence. But in several Catalan cities, the authorities decided to gather all stones on the main square of the town. The name of the Stolpersteine in Spanish is: pedres que fan ensopegar. The first collocation of Stolpersteine in Spain took place on 9 April 2015, first at noon in Navàs, thereafter in the late afternoon in El Palà de Torroella.

The lists are sortable; the basic order follows the alphabet according to the last name of the victim.

Historical background

[edit]

During the Second World War large groups of Spanish Republicans who had fled to France after Franco's victory were arrested by the Nazi regime and deported to the Vichy regime or deported to Mauthausen concentration camp. About 7,000 Spaniards were imprisoned there and sentenced to forced labor, more than half of them were murdered by the Nazi regime. The surviving Spanish concentration camp detainees were deprived by the Franco regime of their nationality and thus made stateless. For several decades they have been denied any form of recognition as victims and they did not receive any reparation.
