Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa/Name changes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A comparison of the internet usage of names for officially renamed South African towns and cities. This page is only concerned with official and current name changes; renaming proposals and reversed name changes are excluded, as are mere spelling alterations such as Mafeking → Mafikeng.

Direct comparisons are not always possible, especially when the name has its primary usage outside of South Africa (e.g. Belfast will mostly refer to the city in Northern Ireland, not the town in Mpumalanga).

This page is intended to help find out which name is the most commonly used, as determined by its prevalence in reliable English-language sources (WP:COMMONNAME). This approach has a number of limitations which are common to all counts of internet search results (see WP:GNUM for more on this subject).
