3 types of music (with fusions)
[edit]Music can essentially be divided into three categories:
- Art music: This includes various types of music, mostly classical (both western and non-western), but also jazz
- Popular music: This is the music that is in the mainstream at the moment
- Traditional music: This is the music of various people of the world; basically what was popular music in a pre-globalisation, pre-copyright, pre-electronic age (with the split between popular and traditional music occuring at different times in different parts of the world, depending on globalisation, etc); typified by an oral tradition
In addition, there are fusions of the above:
- ???: Fusion of Traditional music and Popular music
- ???: Fusion of Traditional music and Art music: This genre has no discernable title (although most prevalent in the romantic era; cf. the Cultural appropriation in western music sections of the World music page), but includes works such as:
- Brahms' Hungarian Dances
- Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland
- Chopin's Polonaises
- Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody
- Some of Percy Grainger's work
- Some of Louis Moreau Gottschalk's work
- ???: Fusion of Art music and Popular music: includes things such as the CD entitled "Beatles go Baroque" (ie. the Beatles arranged in the Baroque style)
Definitions of terms under discussion
[edit]The terms under discussion seem to be defined as follows:
- World music: All traditional music, plus non-Western Art and Pop music (does not include blues or country)
- Roots music:
- General definition (according to Roots music page + common sense): Traditional music + Popular music which is based on traditional music
- Specific definition: American roots music (includes blues and country)
- Folk music: Traditional music, plus popular music which is based on traditional folk music
Wikipedia music organisation
[edit]At the moment, much of the same content appears on eg. the Folk music and World music pages. The following proposals seemed to achieve consensus on the talk page:
- Change Traditional music from being a redirect to Folk music, and make it a defintion, plus a set of links to the appropriate articles; some of the material from Folk music could be used (Done)
- Rewrite World music, Folk music, and Roots music with reference to the following articles:
- The new Traditional music article (done)
- American folk music revival (the Folk music article seems to have large sections about this) (done)
- Move the "World Music" WikiProject to Wikipedia:WikiProject Regional and national music (a geographically-based music project) (done)
- Create "Roots music" (Roots music in the general sense (see above), not the specific sense) (in process)
Proposals Round 2
[edit]Other proposals did not reach consensus, so a new set of proposals to replace them are:
- As all genres are fusional, integrate fusion (music) and Progressive music with Music genre
