Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/National Library
Appearance
Here are some instructions for downloading high resolution photos from the National Library website. The purpose of doing this is to make the photos available to Wikipedia. But before you do so, please familiarise yourself with New Zealand copyright; This template summarises the most important issues.
- Start your photo search on natlib.govt.nz/collections. Put the search term into the search box and hit enter.
- When the results come up, you can restrict your search to images. In the column on the left, there is a 'Filter by type' heading, and there you can click on 'Images'.
- When you find a suitable photo in the list, click on it to open it on its own page.
- In the description underneath the photo, click on the link that says 'See original record'.
- This brings up a page that has, near the bottom, a link that says 'View archived copy online' - click on it.
- This now shows a page with the photo itself. In the tool bar at the top of the page, click on the leftmost button that displays the message 'Download' when you place the cursor on it. Save the file to your computer.
- The file extension of the file you have just downloaded is "jp2". Manually rename this to "jpg".
- For the next part, I use a photo editor called XNView. I'm sure there are other packages that can do the same trick. It's free to download from the net. Open your photo in your photo editor and do whatever manipulations (e.g. cropping) you want to do. Importantly, export the finished file as a jpeg.
- Your photo is now ready for uploading. Do not upload photos to Wikipedia, but upload them to Wikimedia Commons. That's much cleaner, as it makes the photo available to all Wikimedia projects. I find this form most suitable for this task.
- Categorise the photo. Job done.
