Adding media and data
[edit]One of the easiest and most welcome contributions is of photos, videos, and source documents.
- Make a list of relevant or desired photos and media
- Get license releases for existing photos, or take new ones
- For existing photos, use this interactive release generator to generate a release statement, and send it to the permissions list.
- For new photos, take a representative photo of a project or building, ideally in high resolution.
- Include videos of tools or projects where possible
- Videos must be in
.webm
format for upload. If you have a different format, you can use the Video2Commons converter (you'll need to log into your Commons account first). - Look for existing video archives.
- Short videos are especially useful for embedding: a 15-second video of a small device or creature in action can capture the essence of its behavior.
- Long videos are also good, and can be edited into shorter segments later. Up to 100M is the fastest to upload, but files can be up to 4GB. If you have something larger still, ask for help with the upload.
- Videos must be in
- Make a list of related source materials - documents and media that have already been published
- Consider published books, course notes, papers, poems
- Each of these can be added to Wikisource. Multipage works can be automatically paginated; a copy of the file can be uploaded first to Commons. Ask for help with pagination.
- Once on Wikisource, documents can also be set up for translation.
- Adding data elements and statements to Wikidata
- Take the Wikidata tours covering elements and statements.
- Search for data in your topic. Find an item with a schema you can fill out or update. Look at similar items that are more fully described, for examples.
- On your own userpage, make a list of new elements that could use this schema but aren't yet in Wikidata. Search to make sure they don't exist under a slightly different name, and add one of them as a new element with this schema.
- Congrats! You should now know everything you need to create new articles and galleries, and to make off-wiki archives visible and accessible to wikipedians.
