Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Irish Music
Hello, this is a temporary (I hope) replacement for WikiProject Irish Music, to gather users together for a possible future return to the actual WikiProject. Please sign your name in Contributors if you are interested, or list some tasks related to Irish pop, rock or traditional music to be done. For a shortcut to this page, enter "WP:IE/MUS". --FF3000 talk 22:15, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit]New beginnings?
[edit]Not to trample over the grave of the old project but considering it's been three months since this temporary page was set and still nothing has happened to the old page perhaps it would be best to simply purge the old page and begin anew. From there we could delete this page and go about setting up the project to look good and professional enough to attract some new members.
As maybe the big "no activity" tag could put some new people off, instead of occupying this small space re-doing the old page would make the project look more attractive. Just want to suggest this to you and hopefully something good can come of this suggestion.

- Yeah, I agree with you. This "temporary page" is here too long. Do you agree in relaunching the WikiProject with a possible assessment system? --FF3000 · talk 13:26, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- I agree in relaunching the project, but what do you mean by possible assessment system?
- Regards, --RavensFists (talk) 12:06, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
- I mean like WikiProject Ireland, where articles are ranked by importance and quality. The one problem is it's difficult to set up. FF3000 · talk 12:16, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes an assessment system would be useful for organisation, best first to relaunch the project though and then have a discussion as to the details of what constitutes importance in Irish music. For example is the popularity of bands like Bell X1 more important then the contribution that Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann makes to the traditional music scene. Anyway relaunch the project first and probably hope we can recruit new members as well, then we discuss ratings.

- Great, we'll do that. Let's start to purge the project page, as you suggested, and we'll move over as soon as that's done. FF3000 · talk 14:22, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Some observations
[edit]I've set up the assessment system and am now assessing all those articles which were already linked to the project. These can be rearranged in future if necessary. In doing this I have noticed a few things so I'll leave a list here for anyone who is interested. --candle•wicke 16:19, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Anúna. Apparent COI being flagged on the talk page (dated July 2009).
- Michael Finnegan (song). Where is the Irish music connection (unless use in a Neil Jordan film counts)?
- Bands such as Flogging Molly are listed despite being American yet, for example, bands such as Orthodox Celts and Oasis are not. How wide is the scope of this project? It would be possible to take in connections to a lot of music articles if we tried (anyone who has recorded at Grouse Lodge, etc.) but this might impact on those that really need the help by making them harder to find. Thoughts?
- And on those that really need the help... I don't think U2 need the assistance (having their very own WikiProject, the band being an FA, several GAs of their own and lots of people from outside Ireland willing to work on them, etc.) See The Chieftains or A Woman's Heart for prominent topics which probably need it a bit more, not to mention all the articles which have been low on attention, e.g. Republic of Loose until recently. There currently seem to be little or no U2-related articles in the WikiProject anyway. Maybe add a link to the U2 WikiProject on the Irish music WikiProject?
- Just wondering where is the assessment system you set up? Could you provide a wikilink so I could have look? Also I created this assessment page however it may be obselete now because you created one already.
- As for the scope of the project I believe for the moment at least we should confine ourselves to music/bands which originated in Ireland, not the likes of Flogging Molly or Orthodox Celts, that would be far too broad at the moment. This would allow us, as you pointed out, to concentrate on Irish bands which really need the help.
Another thing to consider is do we take bands/music from Nothern Ireland under our scope, eg.Snow Patrol, I myself am for it but it's up for debate really. Opinions? - Also I reckon we could poach a few new members from the U2 wikiproject.

- They are in Category:Irish music articles by quality and Category:Irish music articles by importance. Probably not all correct or consistent but I gave some of the more obvious ones a higher ranking, etc. and it can always be changed anyway. Just had to change all the templates on those talk pages so I gave them at least a temporary ranking for something to build upon. --candle•wicke 19:46, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Do Snow Patrol need the help (I haven't checked)? I know that The Divine Comedy and Duke Special are two which could be improved upon so including Northern Ireland may benefit those... I am going to remove Flogging Molly from the project now... --candle•wicke 19:55, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- No, Snow Patrol don't really need the help, was just using them as an example of a Northern Irish band, bands such as you listed there would benefit from our help though and that's why I think the project scope should encompass Northern Ireland. --RavensFists (talk) 20:07, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, we already had The Priests under the old version of the project so I would agree to include anything from Northern Ireland, particularly if it doesn't have much recognition internationally. --candle•wicke 20:27, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
