From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A typewriter is a desktop or portable tool for printing text on a piece of paper. With more legible and faster results than handwriting, typewriters became indispensable among 20th-century professionals for creating documents and correspondence. "Keys" displaying letters, numbers, and other symbols are pressed, causing the typewriter to instantly print the desired characters. Electromechanical and electronic designs eventually replaced earlier mechanical models, but by the 1980s, word processor applications on personal computers made typewriters largely obsolete. They remain popular in developing countries, among niche markets, and as a collector's item.

(What is it? Why was it useful? Why is it notable? When was it used? How did it work? How did it evolve?)

In the late 19th century and at the start of the 20th century, a person who operated such a device was sometimes called a typewriter but it became more common to call that person a typist.
