BENJAMIN MAURICE READ IS A NATIVE NEW MEXICAN HISTORIAN WHOSE FATHER WAS A CIVIL WAR SOLDIER, AND WHOSE SPANISH MOTHER LIVED MOST OF HER LIFE IN NEW MEXICO. His bilingual-bicultural background enabled him to write a book in Spanish on the MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR, and THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF NEW MEXICO (1912) in English from a unique perspective.
He was an early member of the New Mexico Historical Society, and possessed or had access to many important documents. The letter of Louis Ruibiboux to Manuel Alvarez is one of them.
