Oklahoma Baptist University [1]was founded in 1906 and opened for classes in September 1910, holding classes in the basement of the First Baptist Church and in the Convention Hall of Shawnee, Oklahoma. In 1915, the first building on the present campus was completed, and the school moved to the original 60-acre campus in September of that year. Today, OBU has 30 buildings on 189 acres. OBU is owned by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and operated through a Board of Trustees elected by the Convention.
The school says its mission "finds expression through a strong liberal arts core curriculum which supports degree programs designed to prepare students for careers and graduate study; through activities planned to stimulate spiritual, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical development; and through an environment that reflects the application of Christian principles and teachings." OBU is a 4-year co-educational residential campus.
The school offers ten bachelor's degrees in 78 areas of study, plus an Associates in Christian Studies and a Masters in Business Administration. In the Fall 2006, enrollment was 1,606 from throughout the U.S. and 18 countries, offering a 15:1 student:faculty ratio. It sponsors 16 sports programs (NAIA), including men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, tennis, men's baseball, and women's softball. However, there is no varsity football program. The mascot is the Bison.
