FCM played from 1960 to 1965 and 1966 to 1991 in the highest division of the East German football league, the DDR-Oberliga. The greatest success in the club's history came in 1974 when they became the only East German club to win an European competition, the European Cup Winner's Cup. After the Wende, Magdeburg failed to make the jump to professional football and have played since then in the third or fourth division.
