Description
[edit]This project will cover the field of toponymy (scientific study of place names) and will be similar in structure to Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy, which covers human names. The project will be helpful in bringing order to the classification and coverage of places names, which are currently randomly distributed between geo-disambiguation pages, set index articles, and articles proper, as well as facilitate efforts to reference the data about the place names' origins.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); September 30, 2010; 14:51 (UTC) 14:51, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Support
[edit]Please specify whether or not you would join the project.
- Content-wise, my interests are primarily in Russia and to a limited extent in the countries of the former Soviet Union, but I'd be happy to help with the procedural side of things as well.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); September 30, 2010; 14:51 (UTC) 14:51, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- If I understand you right then, yes, this is overdue. I'd join, though really I already try to include information about placenames on articles about geography I work on, and that's about all I'll do. --Quintucket (talk) 14:34, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
[edit]I suggest joining either WP:WikiProject Linguistics or WP:WikiProject Geography instead. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:33, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I left a note at both WikiProjects' talk pages inviting the members to leave comments regarding your proposal here. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); November 29, 2010; 19:03 (UTC)
- Update: it doesn't look that any of those projects are interested (judging by the lack of comments here in the past week). I just wanted to point out that we do, for example, have separate WikiProjects for animals and plants, even though we also have WikiProject Biology at the same time. Arguably, plants and animals would fit WP:Biology much better than this proposed WP:Toponymy would fit either WP:Linguistics or WP:Geography. Thoughts?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); December 6, 2010; 15:16 (UTC)
