Description
[edit]ProjectDescription I.M.S. (talk) 01:41, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What this project would be is "a collaborative effort to help classify and improve the quality of all articles relating and pertaining to British Rock group The Kinks." As User Optigan13 pointed out, it would encompass "albums, singles, and solo projects (Ray Davies, et al.).", as well as articles like accompanists Mike Cotton and producer Shel Talmy.
The scope of the project is articles about The Kinks and their work, and people and things directly related to - or who have achieved a significant part of their notability through their connection to - The Kinks as a group and individually.
I've (I.M.S.) drawn up some rough sketches of a project page, the template above, tags, portals, etc. If I could find some support I'm sure It wouldn't be stagnant. I've drawn up a template for inviting new members, based on several preexisting ones. It would look like this:
Hi! I've seen you around on The Kinks' articles... Would you consider becoming a member of WikiProject The Kinks, a WikiProject which aims to expand and improve coverage of The Kinks on Wikipedia? Please feel free to join us. |
This template takes the username of the inviter as an optional parameter. For example:
{{WikiProject The Kinks Invite|--~~~~}}

[edit]From their Wikipedia article:
“ | The Kinks are an English rock group categorized in the US as a British Invasion band. The Kinks have been cited as one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time. | ” |
The Kinks have had many hits over time, including "You Really Got Me", which went #1 in the UK and #7 in the US, and "All Day and All of the Night", which rose to #2 in the UK and #7 in the US. In 1970 their single "Lola" went #2 in the UK and #9 in the US, and in 1982-'83 their song Come Dancing went #11 in the UK and #6 in the US.

My argument is this:
Three years ago, a similar proposal was put down. However, that was three years ago. Much has changed since then. At the time, there were only about 50 articles in total relating and pertaining to The Kinks. Now there are 49 pages about songs by them, 38 pages about albums by them, 41 total articles in the category "Songs written by Ray Davies" and 5 pages in the category "Songs written by Dave Davies". I believe The Kinks merit a WP to help organize all of this. Look at The Who, who already have a WP. There are 52 articles in the "Songs by the The Who" category. Roughly the same, and they got a WP a while back when they had even less articles to be managed. Therefore I see that side of the argument (the one that defeated the proposal for WP:The Kinks a while back) as not relevant anymore.
I don't believe there is a case for lack of notability or significance. So, does anyone think that The Kinks need a Wikiproject? - I.M.S. (talk) 01:41, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment - Looking at the recent topics at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Who, the project appears to be inactive, as all of the discussions are one sided (a post with no responses on the page). Also, your formatting on this request could use some adjustment. This isn't an WP:MFD, you don't need to be defensive on this. You're free to create a project if you want, these proposals exist to gauge interest by pointing possible participants to sign up here, and to get feedback from others on whether the project would be a useful and productive effort. Your description of the project should replace the ProjectDescription text above. It should also be more concise. Something along the line of "This project would cover the musical group The Kinks, including their albums, singles, and solo projects (Ray Davies, et al.)."
- I would suggest a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Rock music if enough people are interested. The article standards are going to be similar to other rock music articles. People who focus on other groups should be able to provide feedback and assistance on developing Kinks related articles. There are a large number of apparently inactive projects in Category:WikiProject Music groups. See if you can find some other people who would be interested in possibly forming a task force, otherwise I would suggest working via existing WikiProjects. -Optigan13 (talk) 05:10, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment - I'm also not sure what good would be done by such a project. The Kinks are under-represented and a lot of what was here was not accurate. I've done my best to put right what I knew was wrong and expand a bit and will continue to do so. I notice you (I.M.S.) are doing the same (although possibly some of the new articles on album tracks will end up being deleted - perhaps it would be better to put that information on the album's page). Considering the lack of debate on the Lola title 'debate', it seems there aren't enough people interested to warrant a group but if there does end up being one, of course I'll join. I think what most articles need are good sources and since I don't have any books on the Kinks, I can't really help there. It would be good and I have tried asking around for input before but unless there are a committed group of people it won't really work.Retro junkie (talk) 18:29, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment - I'd still like to do a WikiProject, but I'll consider doing a Task Force. It's a shame there aren't enough people interested in The Kinks to do this. So, task force? I suppose it would be a division of WikiProject Rock Music, correct? Is it possible that if enough interest was gained for the task force that someday it could be upgraded to a WP? Thanks for your input, everyone. The polls are still open! I.M.S. (talk) 19:08, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I'd support this in theory (UK Jive has sat on my to-do list for years), but I honestly don't think there's enough momentum behind it. You may want to spam this proposal - whether as a separate project or as a task force - at WP:LONDON, as the Kinks' unique relationship with London's popular music scene (the relationship between the Beatles and Liverpool, or Factory Records and Manchester, are the only comparable cases I can think of), and I suspect you may find more interest among people who write on Haringey then among the general music fans. – iridescent 2 16:24, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
