Description
[edit]This WikiProject is a rename of Wikipedia Saves Public Art, which started as a university project to document public art in Wikipedia. It has since expanded to receive positive attention in the Wikimedia world, the academic world, and even at museum conferences. It has been considered best practice in GLAM-Wiki relations, and provides a wide variety of resources for Wikipedians and cultural sector professionals alike. We'd like to be formalized as a WikiProject and have a proper name. When we started out we didn't have a grasp of the Wikipedia WikiProject community, its procedures and its naming conventions. This change of name has been discussed here. HstryQT (talk) 22:00, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion
[edit]One of the things that has often been raised as a concern about the project as it currently stands is the "saves" naming. This university project was originally named in homage to the Save Outdoor Sculpture! project. However, now that it's an ongoing thing that even has a French Wikipedia spin-off (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Art_public) the name change to make it consistent with the rest of the Wikiprojects seems in order. The other issue that was raised was the relationship of "public art" to projects about "visual art" and "sculpture". I would suggest that "public art" is a daughter-project to VisArts and a sister project to "sculpture". Much public art is sculpture and much sculpture is public art but they are not synonymous. - Thanks for this synopsis, El Lama. It's worth noting that the sculpture project is dead. Assuming a name change does happen, I would prefer it not happen before 12-14, the end of the class it's being used for currently. See Wikipedia:WSPA/IndianaStatehouse. Also, does anyone know if the name change will affect the template that we've used to collect articles about public art? --RichardMcCoy (talk) 15:10, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes - there is no immediate hurry as the status quo isn't broken. It's just that changing it will be an improvement. And yes, it's quite probable that templates will break but we can probably get a bot to mass swap-out the "saves" templates for the new one, when it's ready. - That shouldn't be a problem: Just have the old file name redirect to the new one. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:18, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
