The proposed WikiProject was not created. – Joe (talk) 10:11, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Description
[edit]This proposal is dedicated to the topic Petroleum since this natural resource has become more than a basic commodity to the modern world, it has become an necessity to survive today's modern society; and as the rest of the world continues to modernize, the reliance and demand for this resource is unlikely to diminish; it is in fact the contrary. So much so that this vital resource has caused political and geographical disputes, even outright war. The consumption of Petroleum has especially and obviously caused environmental issues. The significants of the topic and the amount of articles should be more than sufficient enough to form this WikiProject. Jerium (talk) 11:42, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion
[edit]- I think the scope of this proposed WikiProject is too small. Compare it with the scope of other successful WikiProjects like Medicine or Climate Change... EMsmile (talk) 22:47, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- EMsmile Please elaborate, what is "too small" to form a WikiProject? Jerium (talk) 23:11, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I think a successful WikiProject needs thousands of articles and at least a hundred or so members. Take a look at the other WikiProjects. In general, it's hard to make them fly. Many of them linger with low activity levels. Why don't you rather add your idea to an existing project as a sub-project or taskforce? Maybe there is a WikiProject on fossil fuels, energy or something like that. EMsmile (talk) 23:55, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- EMsmile A WikiProject only dies out when there is no one left to dedicate their own time to the subject, and there is no rule preventing editors from leaving or joining a project. I listed only five categories that have almost 430 pages combined, just five cats. Theoretically, if this were a WikiProject, it would already have an assessment that nears WP:CRYPTID with just the pages that are in those five cats I linked; and I didn't even link biography articles. Jerium (talk) 00:52, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- What speaks against my suggestion of piggy backing this onto an existing related WikiProject? EMsmile (talk) 12:20, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree with EMsmile; this topic is likely too small to attract a group of editors with enough capacity to maintain a WikiProject. WikiProject Energy is a much more likely place for you to find collaborators. And collaboration is the raison d'etre for Wikiprojects. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 17:55, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Femke & EMsmile There are other kinds of energy, and WP:ENERGY already has 24,000 plus pages assessed, that doesn't include oil spills and articles such as Greenhouse gas emissions and other federal laws pertaining to petro though; and no, I will not burden the project by placing more project banners. Jerium (talk) 18:58, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I've just tagged Greenhouse gas emissions with WP:ENERGY. This is not "a burden on the project". It just means that the article GHGE falls under the WP:ENERGY energy topic as well. Well, good luck with finding collaborators for your proposed new project. Femke and I have given you advice but of course you're free to do what you want. Just remember: "Creating a WikiProject is the process of creating a group of people who want to work together." as per here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject. EMsmile I’m very aware what it takes to make a WikiProject, and you gave me non-needed advice. Jerium (talk) 11:38, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I am finding your reply rather rude. Can I remind you that you had asked for advice here which is what brought me here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Climate_change#WikiProject_Petroleum . Don't ask for advice if you're not interested in hearing it. Anyway, I'll take this page off my watchlist now and wish you good luck with your Wikipedia editing work. EMsmile (talk) 14:08, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- EMsmile I don’t recall asking for advice, only that there was a WikiProject proposal. And likewise with you lecturing me on how to start a WikiProject, rude. Jerium (talk) 15:09, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- A number of WikiProjects start out as as a task force of a larger product. I am thinking that organizing a task force on this topic under WikiProject Energy would provide a proof of concept for having a separate project. BD2412 T 04:51, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I can agree. I would say that Jerium has focused on an important topic, and I'd be more than glad to be part of a petroleum task force under the energy wikiproject. Historyday01 (talk) 17:17, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
