Importance
[edit]The importance ranking of an article is an assessment of its importance to Wikiproject Cornwall. Articles are rated either; Top, High, Mid or Low depending. Unassessed articles are rated as Unknown (???).
The importance of an article is not related to the quality or content of an article, for quality assessment guidelines see WP:Quality scale or this projects Assessment page. A stub is not automatically Low importance, nor is a featured article upgraded due to its quality.
The importance of a article is based on the main subject of the article, Bodmin Moor is not more important due to perceived importance of Jamaica Inn for example.
Importance does not necessarily equate to fame, nor to Wikipedia notability. It should not be measured by any internet available metric, including google search stats, page views rankings, amount of news coverage, or any other artificial or short term metric. This is not to say that these factors can't be used to assist in determining the importance of an article.
The criteria used for rating article importance are not meant to be an absolute or canonical view of how significant the topic is. Rather, they attempt to gauge the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic (and thus the immediate need to have a suitably well-written article on it). Thus, subjects with greater popular notability may be rated higher than topics which are arguably more "important" but which are of interest primarily to students of Wikipedia.
Note that general notability need not be from the perspective of editor demographics; generally notable topics should be rated similarly regardless of the country or region in which they hold said notability. Thus, topics which may seem obscure to a specific audience—but which are of high notability in other places—should still be highly rated.
Priority assessment
[edit]An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{WikiProject Cornwall}} project banner on its talk page:
- {{WikiProject Cornwall| ... | importance=??? | ...}}

Specific importance ratings
[edit]Top
[edit]This category is reserved for the places, topics and things that are of the most importance to Cornwall and which are both considered to be closely associated with Cornwall and recognisable as being Cornish to the extent that someone who lives in another country would consider it. Topics critically importance to what Cornwall is should be included. All Top importance articles should be recognisable and of interest to the whole United Kingdom or further.
High
[edit]Articles with recognition in the Westcountry or all of Cornwall. Most very important articles fit into this category as the Top importance category is reserved for a select few articles.
Mid
[edit]Articles with recognition in most of Cornwall or specialist topics. Many articles fit into this category, such as larger villages, historically relevant people, economically significant companies and places often visited, such as beaches. Very few living people should be rated above Low importance.
Low
[edit]Most people, places and businesses should be rated as Low importance. Anything that is of higher importance to some other Wikiproject, but which has a limited attachment to Cornwall may also fit into this category.
specific topics, places and things
[edit]Organisations
[edit]As a rule, private companies, businesses, brands or other ventures should not be rated as Top importance, and only should be rated as High importance if they are of significant economic relevance to Cornwall and are well known nationally and overseas. Most will be of Low importance, consider Mid reserved for highly notable companies.
Cornwall Council is rated as Top importance due to its nature, parish councils should be rated as Mid or Low importance only.
