Wikipedia:WikiProject Connect the Dots

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to forge connections between users for the purposes of article improvement. WikiProject Connect the Dots is named the way it is both because of the connections to be forged, and the hope that those connections will create a better, more whole coverage of any given subject.

If you would like to help, please inquire on the Talk page and see the to-do list there.

WikiProject Connect the Dots

Scope

[edit]

To better illustrate the purpose of this WikiProject here is an example (and the main inspiration for WikiProject Connect the Dots):

In the fan fiction article, the subject is first and foremost literary in nature - but it also has technological aspects, historical aspects, social/cultural aspects, and, perhaps most importantly, legal aspects which in order to give a whole and unbiased coverage of the subject in question, must all be well-covered.

So, what happens if a person with an interest in improving the article for fan fiction knows enough about the technological, cultural, and literary aspects to cover all of those - but not enough about the legal aspects, or the historical aspects? What if their understanding, for instance, of legal matters in general is poor? Why, they'd either be forced to let the article sit there with fewer improvements, perhaps never to be improved upon again... or to find people who could help them learn more about that aspect of the subject, or help them improve the article by directly editing the article themselves.

Naturally, the latter approach would be preferred, as it leads to quicker article improvement. WikiProject Connect the Dots is intended to make this process easier by allowing Wikipedians an easy way to find other Wikipedians who can connect them to people and WikiProjects that could be of potential help to them.

Members have several options for participation:

  • They can merely respond to queries for help posted to the Project's main Talk page (by either responding personally, or directing the user to another WikiProject, user, or even outside expert that could help).
  • They can seek out users who are having trouble finding help for articles they're working on, who do not yet know of this WikiProject's existance, and direct them to the WikiProject's main page.
  • They can seek out articles which obviously require contributions coming from multiple knowledge bases (such as fan fiction) and post a help query on the Talk page.
  • They can participate in the current Connect the Dots Article Improvement Drive, a feature of the WikiProject which will, unlike the usual Article Improvement Drives, be both unlimited in time (current Article Improvement Drives are one week in length) and more limited in the scope, with such articles only being articles whose subjects require multiple areas of knowledge and therefore require the kind of service this WikiProject already provides.
