Focus on...
JESUS
CHRIST
"Does Jesus know us--do we know him?" is the title of a Hans von Balthasar' book that epitomizes the duality of the two possible, and at times related, topics in Christology. One aspect deals with how Christians come to know Christ, the other focuses on the knowledge of Christ about the world during his earthly ministry.
The article Knowledge of Christ discusses how different Christian traditions have recommended varying paths for gaining a better knowledge of Christ, going back to Apostle Paul's statement in Philippians 3:10-12: "I want to know Christ".
While some traditions focus on sharing in Christ's sufferings, others emphasize the importance of scripture; while others suggest that the divine reading should be accompanied by specific spiritual exercises and contemplations.
From the bookshelf
Maloney's book is one of the few titles to deal with the Knowledge of Christ as its sole topic. While Maloney only discusses the knowledge of Christ during his ministry from a purely theological perspective, von Balthasar addresses both aspects of the issue with a more readable and broad presentation.
Did you know...
- ... that while the Old Testament has a wide variety of epithets and names that refer to God in Hebrew, the Greek text of the New Testament uses far fewer variants?
