What happened to the last ball used in the 2007 World Series?

So, what happened to the ball used to strike out Rockies player Seth Smith to win the 2007 World Series?
According to Jonathan Papelbon, who got the ball after the strikeout, his dog ate it. For the first few weeks after the Series ended, Papelbon acted like he had no idea where the ball was. After that, he began revealing that his dog, named Boss, apparently climbed onto his counter in his Mississippi home and chewed it up. Papelbon says his dog loves rawhide and baseballs are his toys. Jonathan also said Boss snatched it out of his hand.
Papelbon said he would keep what's left of it.
However, the Red Sox were not as interested to get the ball, like they were at the end of the 2004 World Series when former first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz took the ball. They say that ball was important because it was their first World Series title in 86 years; this time, they just say Papelbon can keep what is left of the ball.
