  • Friedman's departure triggered an opt-out clause in Rays manager Joe Maddon's contract, which he exercised. Maddon was quickly hired as manager of the Chicago Cubs, prompting the Rays to consider filing a complaint with the commissioner's office, according to media reports.

This month, there were a few discussions on images: how to decide which image is best to use in a article, what articles could use images, and a request for help identifying subjects in images. There was a discussion on team nicknames from the era where teams did not adopt official monikers.

A couple of threads discussed what name to use for the article on O.co Coliseum: one at the article's talk page, and one at Wikipedia talk:Article titles. There was no consensus to change existing practice of using the current official venue name.

An issue arose regarding the notability of bullpen catchers, and a thread was started at Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports). The current consensus appears to be that bullpen catchers, whether or not they are officially a team coach, do not have a record of meeting the general notability guideline with a high enough frequency to warrant the presumption of notability set by the baseball-specific notability guidelines.

In terms of article promotion, we had four good articles promoted this month, but as we noted last month, there is a large backlog of GANs related to baseball awaiting review, so if you can help, that would be appreciated. No FAs or FLs were promoted.

Thanks to everyone for their work on baseball-related articles; it is much appreciated!

The Commissioner's Trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the World Series. Its current design is a ring of flags, one for each of Major League Baseball's thirty teams, which rise above a silver baseball. A new trophy is commissioned each year to be presented to the champions. The article achieved Good Article status in July 2009.
