Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian Roads/Standards/Map standards
This is the project sandbox of WikiProject Australian Roads/Standards. A project sandbox is a subpage of the project's project page. It serves as a testing spot and page development space for the project and is not an encyclopedia article. For a sandbox of your own, create a project subpage. Other sandboxes: Main sandbox | Tutorial sandbox 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 | Template sandbox |
This is an essay on style. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more WikiProjects on how to format and present article content within their area of interest. This information is not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. |
These map standards should be used for creating new maps to be displayed in the article's infobox. There will be some variance between states/territories, based on route marking schemes in use. There is not a set standard for maps used elsewhere in articles (generally for a localised area where features other than roads are shown); however, following a similar colour scheme would allow for consistency between articles.
Note: Sizes in pixels are based on a map width of 700px. Line widths are relative values for GIS/vector data, and can be adjusted as long as the ratios remain the same. 1/10th of the value (eg 0.6 instead of 6) often works well.
Regional, Statewide, and Multi-state maps
[edit]- Can be derived from Geoscience Australia GIS data (2004) [CC-BY-AU]. New roads can be added if a KML file exists, or from OpenStreetMap.org data (best for smaller segments, may be tedious for a long road).

Local maps within an urban area
[edit]- Can be made from OpenStreetMap data [CC-BY-SA], (Geoscience Australia data isn't accurate at these scales, except for the ACT). GIS data for limited-size areas can be exported from OSM, but will require some work to separate out different road types.
