[edit]Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.
Outcomes
[edit]- Met with Stephen Kaye to discuss potential African Alumni and Swahili Translation editathon session for Gather Festival 2017.
- Arranged 'Bragging Writes: Women in Art and Women Writers' editathon for International Women's Day on 8th March 2017 as part of the Gather Festival.
- Met with Susan Ross, the new Gaelic Wikimedian at the National Library of Scotland to discuss areas of crossover & potential collaborations.
- Discussed the 'Celtic Knot' conference idea to be held at the University of Edinburgh Business School on 5 & 6 July 2017 with a view to showcasing innovative approaches in Open Education, Open Knowledge and Open Data to supporting & developing Celtic & Indigenous Language Communities through Wikimedia & related projects.
- Created some initial Wikidata queries to analyse the content already on Wikipedia.
- Began semester long project with Edinburgh University Translation Society to translate an article on one language Wikipedia into a different language Wikipedia and thereby increasing cross-cultural understanding.

Strategic Goal 2
[edit]Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.
Outcomes
[edit]- Arranged to train Christina Hussell - primary liaison in the Digital Skills team - on 13 April 2017 so that the Digital Skills team can deliver skills training sessions going forward in order for a sustained involvement with Wikimedia UK post the residency.
- 4 proposals for sessions to the OER17 Conference on 5-6 April 2017 were approved (1 presentation on the Edinburgh Residency, 1 lightning talk on Content Translation, 1 lightning talk on the WikiCite project and 1 workshop on Gamifying Wikimedia).
- Held #1Lib1Ref event in collaboration with Gavin Willshaw (digital curator) on Friday January 20th 2017 which yielded 63 citations added to Wikipedia and a blogpost.
- Wrote accompanying blogpost: #1Lib1Ref Wikipedia turns 16 and created two 'How to' videos.
- Continued planning arrangements with Agomoni Ganguli Mitra to hold Gender, Global Health & Justice editathon on February 21st 2017.
- Wrote 5 blog articles on the Wikimedian in Residence blog.

[edit]- Recorded 5 video interviews including: one with a Reproductive Biology student discussing the Wikipedia assignment from last semester; one with Translation Studies MSc students; one with Translations Studies MSc course leaders on their experiences; one with World Christianity MSc students and finally one with World Christianity MSc course leader, Dr. Alex Chow.
- Arranged a Wikipedia in Education: Event for Course Leaders event for 1st March 2017 so course leaders from last semester can share their good practice.
- Created a 60 page lesson plan for course leaders on How to run a Wikipedia training session with accompanying slide deck.
- Arranged a 'How to run a Wikipedia editathon: Staff Skills Training event (inside & outside the curriculum)' on Friday 17th March 2017.
- Wrote up 3 case studies of the 3 assignments the residency supported in the curriculum last semester.
- Planned Wikidata workshop with Navino Evans (Histropedia) as part of the Wiki Education summit at Middlesex University on 20 February 2017.
- Arranged to attend a Wikipedia as the front matter to all research coffee talk at the Astronomy department on 2nd March 2017.
- Commenced the Semester 2 assignment in Translation Studies MSc where the students are this time asked to translate 2000 words in the reverse language direction from last semester.
- Arranged meeting with Lauren Gawne and Lauren Hall-Lew of the Linguistics department with a view to investigating a potential #Lingwiki collaboration.
- Attended meeting with Antonella Sorace of Bilingual Matters with a view to her participating in the 'Celtic Knot' Wiki Conference on 5 & 6 July 2017.

Digitisation
[edit]Collections identified for potential future upload:
- The proposal for CC-BY images to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons has been drafted and is to be discussed with senior managers this week.
- The Wikisource community have confirmed that selected digitised PhD theses from the university would be appropriate to uplaod to Wikisource and be within the project scope. The university has been digitising its collection of PhD theses for the last few months and is now at a stage where it can consider uploading a test case to Wikisource: a medical thesis by British physician & geologist Thomas James Jehu pending approval. In addition, the Wikisource community have intimated that a number of the Open Books could also be imported, pending approval. Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator, is to upload a test case of Thomas Jehu's PhD thesis to Wikisource during the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February 2017.

[edit]- Finalised discussions with Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), Lothian Health Service Archives, Surgeons' Hall Museum, colleagues in Information Services and the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine; and now the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons (Glasgow) regarding the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February.
