Course description
[edit]Introduction to Digital Literacies teaches students ways of reading, analyzing, researching, and composing in emerging media. This course introduces concepts and practices of rhetorical communication, focusing on how they power our use of new media. Through individual and group projects, students will understand and enact the roles of user, critic, and designer in digital interactions, and reflect on what this means for themselves and our society. To offer a framework for understanding these processes, we will study the cultural changes that led into and are emerging from digital media.
Wikipedia assignment
[edit]The official title for this unit is "Collaborative Research." Students will be working in small groups (3 or 4) to create a new article, improve an existing one, or expand a stub. Students will be choosing their own topics within their groups, with guidance from the instructor and Online Ambassador.

- Setting up of individual user accounts and sandboxes
- Editing practice; Markup and formatting commands
- Topic research and development: Portals, Stubs, and Projects
- Review of prior 213 class articles
- Identify Online Ambassador
- Resources: Editing; Sandboxes; Portals; Stubs; Projects; The Missing Manual
- Assignment: Explore potential topics, post in Pathfinder’s sandbox page by Oct 11 (see course schedule)
Week 8 (3): Oct 11–25
- Develop topic, explore content
- Select topic proposal for review by Online Ambassador
- Assignment: Pathfinders coordinate topic revision with OA; divide responsibilities within groups
Week 10 (4): Oct 25–29
- Finalize topic and group responsibilities
- Ongoing work on research and article development
- Pathfinders post overview of article intentions in Talk pages (where applicable)
- Assignment: Begin to draft articles in sandboxes (each group will decide details)
Week 11 (5): Oct 30–Nov 5
- Draft articles must be ready in sandboxes by end of class Oct 30
- Pathfinders request additional comments from OA
Week 12 (6): Nov 6–8
- Checking and verification of references and proper use of source language (plagiarism avoidance)
- Move article to Wikipedia as ready (with help from OA if needed)
- Reflective memo due to instructor by Nov 11, 10:00 pm
Weeks 13 on
- All groups monitor status of articles--answer questions, explain articles on talk pages if necessary
- Follow up article status; apply to “Featured article” or “Did you know?” if appropriate; help may be requested from OAs
