Established in July 20, 1897 in Rio de Janeiro,The Brazilian Literature Academy is the maximum linguistic and literary agency of Brazil.
History
[edit]In the end of 1900's century, when some brazilian writers and intellectuals desired to establish a nacional academy, like French Academy. This iniciative was tajen by Lúcio de Mendonça, rendered in preparatories meetings that began in December 15, 1896, under Machado de Assis (elected by aclamation) presidency, in the Revista Brasileira editorship. At these meetings, in January 28,1897, the Brazilian Literacture Academy Statute were approved, arranged by its 40 founder members. In July 20 of the same year, was happened the Inaugurate Session, in the Pedagogium building, near of Passeio Público, in the Rio downtown. Without own headquarter neither financial resources, the Academy meetings were realized in the old Ginásio Nacional building, in the Noble Room of Interior State Department, in the room of the Real Literacture Portuguese Cabinet, for solemn sessions over all. The common sessions happened in the First Secretary advocate office, Rodrigo Octávio, in the 47 Quitanda Street. From 1904, the Academy got the left side of Silogeu Brasileiro, a governamental building that sheltered some other cultural institutions, where was the headquarter until acquire its own building.
The "Petit Trianon"
[edit]In 1923, thankfulness its period president, Afrânio Peixoto, and of, at that time France embassador, Raymond Conty, the french government donated to the Academy the French Pavillion Building, constructed to the Brasil Independece Centennial Exhibition, a Petit Trianon de Versalhes reproduction, constructed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel architect, between 1762 and 1768. These buildings are protected by the Cultural Patrimony State Institute (in portuguese INEPAC), of Cultural State Cabinet, since November 9th, 1987. It's room work until now sheltering the regular meetings, the commemorative solemn sessions, the presidency ownership chair sessions, the new academicians ownership sessions, such as the tradicional Thursday's Tea. Can be visited by the people in guided visitation, or in cultural programs such as chamber music concerts, members book casting, conference cycle and theatrical shows.
