Like in 2020 where readers went en masse to learn about the Harris and Biden families, this week there are more relatives of politicians. Albeit one would've expected many would know the Trumps already. Oh, and one of them nearly got assassinated. Oh, we nearly forgot about the global tech outage.
Rank | Article | Class | Views | Image | Notes/about |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J. D. Vance | 11,408,132 | The Republicans chose the guy who'll run for vice president in November, and instead of repeating the last two elections where #5 was paired with another old white man, this time they copied the victorious Democrats in picking a younger running mate, Ohio senator James David Vance. It also involves a woman of Indian descent - but not the prospect VP, instead it's his wife, Usha, whom Vance met at Yale Law School. Vance's very conservative stances certainly helped him get the gig. | ||
| Usha Vance | 4,207,143 | |||
| Shannen Doherty | 3,098,210 | An actress since age 11, Doherty's work included popular roles in Heathers, Beverly Hills, 90210, Mallrats, and Charmed. She died from breast cancer at age 53, on July 13. | ||
| Attempted assassination of Donald Trump | 2,605,133 | On July 13, 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks (#8) shot 8 rounds at a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania. He killed a firefighter, critically injured two other audience members, and shot Trump's right ear. Crooks was shot and killed by the US Secret Service. Trump was brought down, raised his fist, and shouted "Fight! Fight! Fight!" while the audience chanted "USA! USA! USA!"
Historians will analyse and debate over this for years to come. How did Trump rise to power? What role did the Internet play in this? Why were we so politically divided? Was this inevitable? What were the consequences of this? | ||
| Donald Trump | 2,517,974 | |||
| Project 2025 | 1,828,504 | "Google Project 2025", and a lot of people are doing just that. | ||
| Hillbilly Elegy | 1,808,443 | Written by #1 in 2016 and turned into a film (#20) in 2020, the memoir relates J. D. Vance's upbringing in Middletown, Ohio, within an Appalachian family (mountain white American depicted). It reached the top of The New York Times best seller list, mainly due to his mentioning how then-president Donald Trump (#5) received support from the "hillbilly" and working class demographic. Upon its release, Vance initially criticized Trump, but, oh, how things have changed. | ||
| Thomas Matthew Crooks | 1,647,896 | The 20-year-old man who failed to assassinate Donald Trump (#4). Investigators have not yet determined his motive, and the FBI is researching his history. | ||
| List of United States presidential assassination attempts and plots | 1,478,877 | A comedian once said one of the United States national sports is "shoot the President", and this article shows why. There are cases for just about everyone starting with Andrew Jackson, whose would-be assailant saw both pistols misfire, with four deaths (Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy) and Ronald Reagan being hospitalized but surviving. #4 was the second time a former president was injured in an attack, after Theodore Roosevelt in 1912 (that left him with a bullet in his pectoral muscle for the rest of his life). | ||
| Carlos Alcaraz | 1,373,078 | Right after winning the French Open, this Spanish player got his second Wimbledon title (the picture is him getting the trophy from The Princess of Wales), one of only six players to win the successive Grand Slams in the same year. The previous one was the very legend who he defeated in the final, Novak Djokovic. | ||
| Lamine Yamal | 1,352,228 | Spain became the biggest winners of the UEFA European Championship by earning its fourth title at the UEFA Euro 2024, and one of its heroes turned 17 right before the final, where he had an assist serving #24 open the score against England. Add that he had three other assists and a goal in the other games, and it's no wonder the FC Barcelona striker was chosen as Young Player of the Tournament. | ||
| Richard Simmons | 1,319,503 | America's favorite fitness personality, Simmons was loved so much he was parodied on late-night television talk shows. Known for his Sweatin' to the Oldies aerobics videos in the 1980s, Simmons went on to promote noncompetitive fitness education in public schools. He died at age 76 on July 13. | ||
| Donald Trump Jr. | 1,304,055 | The once-and-future "prince" and "princess" (they're currently engaged) of the U.S. spoke on Day Three (July 17) at the Republican National Convention. Don Jr introduced the future vice-president (#1) before Vance closed the evening by accepting the party's nomination. Don Jr has been very active in his father's political life, as well as running the family business. His fiancée has been a staunch supporter. | ||
| Kimberly Guilfoyle | 1,185,471 | |||
| CrowdStrike | 1,181,965 | This American cybersecurity company based in Austin, Texas released a faulty update to its security software last Friday resulting in nearly 8.5 million computers across the globe using Microsoft Windows to a BSoD and enter a bootloop, thus leading to what was known as the largest digital pandemic ever, disrupting airlines, airports, banks, hotels, hospitals, manufacturing, stock markets, broadcasting, and governmental services, such as emergency services and websites worlwide (the picture is Dulles International Airport affected by this as well). Even though a fix was released within a few hours each affected computer had to be manually fixed. | ||
| Amber Rose | 1,183,620 | This model and former video vixen has been around since appearing in a Young Jeezy music video and dating his producer for two years. In 2016, she called #5, then a presidential hopeful, "an idiot" and "weird"; in July 2024, she announced support of him at the Republican National Convention. | ||
| Ingrid Andress | 1,121,235 | The storied tradition of butchering "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a sport event was continued by this country singer at the 2024 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby. Andress later said she was drunk and this served as an indication that she needed to go to rehab. | ||
| Deaths in 2024 | 1,088,756 | If we don't make it alive Well, it's a hell of a good day to die All our light that shines strong Only last for so long... | ||
| Bob Newhart | 1,010,573 | Unquestionably the best deadpan stammering actor and former stand-up comedian, Newhart died at age 94 on July 18. | ||
| Hillbilly Elegy (film) | 1,006,016 | Many people only learned of #7 through this film adaptation, released during the COVID-19 pandemic and widely decried as a shameful piece of Oscar bait. It did get an Oscar nom for Glenn Close, who was also recognized in other awards, but her performance was one of the three nods the film had at the Golden Raspberry Awards alongside Worst Director and Worst Screenplay, reflecting closely the negative reception that at most gave a pass to the acting. | ||
| Longlegs | 1,018,888 | For a better received Hollywood picture that managed to appear in spite of this political onslaught (as opposed to the cartoons above and below it at the weekend's box office, Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4, and this week's possible box office #1 Twisters) we have a thriller where FBI agent Maika Monroe tries to catch serial killer Nicolas Cage. | ||
| Kalki 2898 AD | 997,011 | This Tollywood epic science fiction film set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD was released three weeks ago and as of last week it has became the seventh Indian film to cross the ₹1,000 crore (US$120 million) box office mark and the third Telugu film to do so. | ||
| Mukesh Ambani | 897,689 | Asia's richest person saw his son Anant marry Radhika Merchant in a 3-day long wedding ceremony that concluded last Sunday. Must be thing for the Ambanis. | ||
| Nico Williams | 888,298 | UEFA European Championship and UEFA Euro 2024 would be #26 and #28 in the list (with #13's ex-wife Vanessa Trump in-between), but the bottom end still had one more football entry through one of #11's teammates, who opened the score in the final. Cole Palmer tied, but in the final minutes Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead again, and two saves right in the goal line afterwards guaranteed the title. | ||
| Melania Trump | 862,506 | One last Trump in #5's current wife, a Slovenian former model who is the mother of young Barron Trump. |
