The bibliography of American writer John Neal (1793–1876) spans more than sixty years from the War of 1812 through Reconstruction and includes novels, short stories, poetry, articles, plays, lectures, and translations published in newspapers, magazines, literary journals, gift books, pamphlets, and books. These works made Neal the first American published in British literary journals, author of the first history of American literature, the first American art critic, a children's literature pioneer, a forerunner of the American Renaissance, and one of the first American male advocates of women's rights. He was the first American author to use natural diction, one of the first to write characters with regional American accents, and the first to use the phrase son-of-a-bitch in an American work of fiction. His critiques of literature, art, and drama anticipated future movements and contributed to the careers of many authors whose careers historically eclipsed Neal's. His short stories helped shape the genre and challenged socio-political phenomena of his time. (Full list...)

Dinosaurs are a diverse group of reptiles of the clade Dinosauria. They first appeared during the Triassic period, between 243 and 233.23 million years ago, although the exact origin and timing of the evolution of dinosaurs is the subject of active research. They became the dominant terrestrial vertebrates after the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event 201.3 million years ago; their dominance continued throughout the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The fossil record demonstrates that birds are modern feathered dinosaurs, having evolved from earlier theropods during the Late Jurassic epoch. As such, birds were the only dinosaur lineage to survive the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event approximately 66 million years ago. Dinosaurs can therefore be divided into avian dinosaurs, or birds; and non-avian dinosaurs, which are all dinosaurs other than birds. (Full list...)

The Shortlist Music Prize was an annual music award for the best album released in the United States that had sold fewer than 500,000 copies at the time of nomination. First given as a cash prize in 2001 under the name Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music, the award was created by two music-industry directors, Greg Spotts and Tom Serig, as an alternative to the commercial Grammy Awards. The recipient was chosen by a panel of members of the entertainment industry and journalists known as "Listmakers". More than 50 of the best albums of the previous twelve months were picked before being narrowed down to the eponymous shortlist, from which a winner was chosen. At the end of 2001, the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós (pictured) became the first recipients following a ceremony at the Hollywood Knitting Factory. The majority of the seven winners were singer-songwriters: Irishman Damien Rice won in 2003, Americans Sufjan Stevens and Cat Power won in 2005 and 2006, respectively, and Canadian Feist won in 2007.
