The Imperial German Navy built a series of protected cruisers in the 1880s and 1890s, starting with the two ships of the Irene class. The Navy only completed two additional classes of protected cruisers, comprising six more ships: the unique Kaiserin Augusta, and the five Victoria Louise-class ships. Because of limited budgets in the pre-Tirpitz era, the German Navy attempted to build vessels that could serve as overseas cruisers and scouts for the fleet, though the ships were not satisfactory. Most of the German protected cruisers served on overseas stations throughout their careers, primarily in the East Asia Squadron in the 1890s and 1900s. Prinzess Wilhelm participated in the seizure of the Kiautschou Bay concession in November 1897, which was used as the primary base for the East Asia Squadron. Kaiserin Augusta, Hertha, and Hansa (pictured) assisted in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, and Vineta saw action during the Venezuelan crisis of 1902–1903. (Full list...)

The Volpi Cup for Best Actress is an award presented by the Venice Film Festival. It is given by the festival jury in honor of an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance from the films in the competition slate. It is named in honor of Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata, the founder of the festival. The first ceremony was held in 1932, when Helen Hayes received the Best Actress award for the title role in The Sin of Madelon Claudet – this was the only time that the award was chosen by public voting. Since its inception, the award has been given to 67 actresses. Only three of them have won more than once: Shirley MacLaine, Isabelle Huppert and Valeria Golino (pictured), who have each won the cup twice. Ariane Ascaride is the most recent winner in this category, for her portrayal of Sylvie in Gloria Mundi at the 2019 festival. (Full list...)

Between 1989 and 1999, 173 singles topped the Hot Rap Singles chart. Hot Rap Songs is a record chart published by the music industry magazine Billboard which ranks the most popular hip hop songs in the United States. With hip hop having greatly increased in mainstream popularity in the late 1980s, Billboard introduced the chart in their issue of March 11, 1989, under the name Hot Rap Singles. The inaugural number-one single on Hot Rap Singles was "Self Destruction" by the Stop the Violence Movement. From its 1989 inception until 2001, the chart was based solely on each single's weekly sales. "Hot Boyz", by Missy Elliott and featuring Nas, Eve and Q-Tip, was the final number-one single of the 1990s. The single's 18-week reign at the top spot extended into the next decade, and it holds the record for the most weeks at number one in the chart's history. LL Cool J (pictured) and Puff Daddy each attained nine number-one hits on the Hot Rap Singles chart during its first 11 years, the most for any artist during this period. (Full list...)

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season was an above-average season for Atlantic hurricanes for the third consecutive year. Though the season officially began on June 1 and continued until November 30, dates which are adopted by convention and historically describe the period during each year when most tropical cyclones form, it effectively started with the formation of Tropical Storm Alberto on May 25. The year produced sixteen tropical depressions, all but one of which further intensified into named tropical storms. Of the fifteen named storms, eight developed into hurricanes, and two further intensified into major hurricanes, which are rated Category 3 or higher on the Saffir–Simpson scale. These two major hurricanes, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael (pictured), contributed to a majority of the season's severe destruction and loss of life, mainly in the United States. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional men's basketball league, consisting of thirty teams in North America (twenty-nine in the United States and one in Canada). Radio Times's Most Powerful People was a series of listings created by the British television and radio magazine Radio Times from January 2003 to June 2005. The lists charted who the magazine believed were the most powerful people from three different areas of British media: TV comedy, TV drama and radio. The listing for TV comedy was published thrice, every January from 2003 to 2005; the drama and radio lists were produced just once each, in July 2004 and June 2005, respectively. The first Most Powerful People listing was published by Radio Times in January 2003, and recognised the most influential people in TV comedy in the UK. It was topped by comedian Ricky Gervais (pictured, right), as a result of the success of the award-winning second series of his TV show The Office. In July 2004, Radio Times published their Most Powerful People in TV Drama list, which was won by actress Julie Walters. The following June, Radio Times published their final Most Powerful People list, which named the most influential people in radio in the UK.
