Elephants are the largest existing land animals. They are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Three living species are currently recognised: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant. Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis or trunk, long tusks, large ear flaps, pillar-like legs, and grey skin. They are herbivorous, and they stay near water when it is accessible. Females (cows) tend to live in family groups, which can consist of one female with her calves or several related females with offspring. Adult males (bulls) live separately, either alone or with other males. The animals communicate by touch, sight, smell, and sound. Threats to elephant populations include poaching for their ivory tusks, habitat destruction, and conflicts with local people. Elephants have an iconic status in human culture and have been featured in art, folklore, religion, literature, and popular culture. (Full article...)

- Reasons for nomination: This article was a TFA ten years ago on May 5, 2013. It has changed and improved since. August 12 is World Elephant Day and the perfect occasion for it to return to the front page. LittleJerry (talk) 21:05, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
