This page in a nutshell: Wikipedia should not be diverted from its primary mission for other socially desirable purposes |
The purpose of Wikipedia, in accordance with the Vision statement of the Wikimedia Foundation and the five pillars of Wikipedia, is the extension of human knowledge to human beings in encyclopedic form with a neutral point of view. Any use of resources that distracts from that purpose should be avoided. One of the policies as to what Wikipedia is not states that Wikipedia is not here to right great wrongs. Normally the rule that Wikipedia is not intended to right great wrongs is stated to discourage battleground editors who have fringe causes that they perceive as great wrongs. However, Wikipedia is also not the means to right real great wrongs other than ignorance. The neutral point of view is non-negotiable. It cannot even be compromised in order to support other noble causes such as world peace, the reduction of economic inequality, or the elimination of global poverty. The extension of human knowledge will, in itself, help to promote other humanitarian objectives such as peace and equality, but must be an end in itself, not a means to other ends. The history of the twentieth century (and of earlier centuries) has shown that, when truth is bent to serve other purposes, neither truth nor any other noble purpose is served, only misguided objectives.
Projects within Wikipedia to use Wikipedia to advance socially desirable purposes such as world peace or economic justice must be viewed with skepticism. This skepticism is further increased by any plan to target Wikipedia's resources in ways that have not been shown to be effective. Portals are an example of an ineffective method of using Wikipedia, and should not be used to advance social objectives. Any socially desirable purpose should be advanced by using Wikipedia to extend human knowledge neutrally, not to bias it or orient it.
