This essay concerns issues about the respell pages (RSP) which handle major misspelled words, to avoid misleading readers into thinking that the misspellings are acceptable alternatives, such as allowing for American or British variants.
The general concept of respell pages is an outgrowth of wp:Disambiguation pages, which handle titles containing the same words, rather than various misspellings of words.
Purpose
[edit]A respell page is intended to field the major misspellings of common words into a relatively few centralized pages, rather than have thousands of redirects for titles which are permuted by every likely misspelling of every word in a title. Also a respell page will emphasize the need to use a general wp:wikisearch to find titles, with less reliance on using numerous redirects just to catch a rare typo in a reader's spelling of a title. In general, a respell page provides a balance between allowing any possible misspelling of words in titles, but also avoid the impression that there are no articles about the requested topic, even though misspelled. The basic concept of respell pages has been used in some dictionary websites which list some possible, close alternatives to a misspelled word.
