Terminology

[edit]
  • Dial-A-Down - Trademarked device[81] used in American football by officials to judge the distance of the ball from different points on the field; usually in measuring distance from the scrimmage line to the next first down or field goal. It is generally constructed using various weather proof material and large enough to be seen from any general area near the field. They are built using a long pole, an anchor or chain to mark the start point and a flip card tablet at the top with bright colored numbering to indicate the down and or distance in yards remaining. They are used in post-secondary and collegiate extra-curriculum football conferences also, to notify teams, coaches, officials and spectators of the current down and the distance from or to the next scrimmage.
