Selections from the following set nominations were approved:

Dinosaurs

[edit]

All of these dinosaur articles are Featured or Good. They represent some of the best work of Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs. The old CD has just five articles, and that isn't enough to fairly represent even the most well known dinosaur genera. This list, while still short, is much more representative, with more diverse groups (instead of having just a single article on one herbivorous dinosaur!). Firsfron of Ronchester 22:21, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how succinct the CD's suposed to be, but the nom can probably afford to lose the less widely known Albertosaurus, Scelidosaurus, Heterodontosauridae, Amphicoelias and Thescelosaurus.Circeus 22:42, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
While I agree there is a difference between dinosaur "superstars" like Diplodocus versus lesser-known genera such as Amphicoelias, the nominations below this one include uncited stubs like Music of Oregon, Hand saw, Wood as a medium(!), etc. Of the above, only Amphicoelias doesn't give its name to a family (or in the case of Albertosaurus, sub-family) of dinosaurs. Firsfron of Ronchester 00:31, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Albertosaurus is in Version 0.5, so it will go into 0.7 automatically. As for the others, I thing this list is concise and representative (I'll have to take your word for that, thought it seems to be based on my limited knowledge). All the articles are also highly rated. I wouldn't object to the entire list going through, as I think we can probably make the next release much bigger, but I'd like to hear what other knowledgable people have to say. Thanks for a great selection, Walkerma 03:29, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Neat! There are other articles that would help make the group here more representative (there are no prosauropods on this list, for example), but these are currently the only ones recognized as GA or FA. Firsfron of Ronchester 04:28, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Recently, six other articles have become GA or FA:
Is it possible to include these articles as well? None of them give their names to families of dinosaurs, but they help fill in the empty gaps. There are still over a thousand other genera still not represented in this nomination, so I don't think it's excessive: imagine if, say, only a few mammals were represented on the release version, despite there being a thousand genera of mammals. Firsfron of Ronchester 11:31, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the original sent into the DVD selection. We need to get more input on the new set; I've heard of the first four, at least! Since quality is not an issue here, we just need to know that they are significant dinosaurs; I'll request more opinions. Walkerma 02:51, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Most of these look to be useful, but I think we should omit the following, which are of limited importance: Arabic Chat Alphabet, Byblos syllabary, D with stroke, Deseret alphabet, History of the IPA, Linear A, Ogham, Rongorongo. Please can you indicate the approximate quality assessment of each? I didn't look at every one, but most seem to be B, with only a few high/top Starts (which is OK). Walkerma 05:28, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've now added all the details after each article, and put my proposals in bold. Looking at this list again now, I think I'd like to include Ogham and Rongorongo after all. Also, although the article on Å is classed as "low" for the project, looking at "what links here" and interwiki links, it seems important enough to include. Please give us some more input before we go ahead and pass these! Thanks, Walkerma 03:46, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The Byblos syllabary (that I've done some cleanup on) is an important document, felt by some scholars working on it (cited in article) to be ancestral to Hebrew script and eventually our own alphabet. --Fire Star 火星 16:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, these 31 have been included in Version 0.7 (including the Byblos syllabary, thanks for the cleanup). Walkerma 05:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

Many of these articles are little more than stubs, and most lack references. However, there is some good content in here, and many nice diagrams and pictures. I would suggest limiting the selection to the following:

  1. Woodworking Poor B
  2. Sandpaper B
  3. Plane (tool) Decent B
  4. Saw B
  5. Carpenter Short B
  6. Chisel Short B
  7. Circular saw Usable Start
  8. Timber Weak B
  9. Wood carving Short B
  10. Wood GA
  11. Woodworking joints Usable Start
  12. Cabinet making Short B, weak on refs but usable
  13. Table saw B, but lacks pix
  14. Butt joint Nice B
  15. Wood router B
  16. Wood as a medium Usable B, though it lacks refs
  17. History of wood carving Long B, lacks refs except 1911B, cleanup tag, usable

I think the others need to be stronger before we include any of them. Walkerma 01:52, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added most (14) of these, but omitted three on further examination. I think the Start-Class ones I mentioned are just too weak to include, and the History of wood carving article does need a rewrite. Walkerma 03:22, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wars of Africa

[edit]

They are important historical events in African history. Some were part of the Cold war, and all of them shaped world history.

Notes

The following articles are already included in Version 0.7: Algerian Civil WarBattle of CannaeDarfur conflictLord's Resistance ArmySecond Congo WarYom Kippur War

Comments
One persistent problem we have is that many African topics - even important ones - have only Start-Class articles. We normally try only to include Starts where the topic is pretty important, or if needed to complete a closed set; however, we are definitely weak in this subject area. This would be my selection:

I'd also like to propose adding the following

If it's possible to improve Rhodesian Bush War a little with some refs, and resolve the POV dispute, that would be a useful article to include as well. Walkerma 02:11, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To the list you made, al least some of these should be added, as they regard some of the most important and bloody African conflicts, some of which are ongoing:
What do you think?--Aldux 17:34, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have time to look over all these right now, but these look like a very good set to add. We already have Darfur conflict, Algerian Civil War and Second Congo War carried over from V0.5. I think this combination will be excellent - thanks! What do others think? Walkerma 17:50, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't looked at the contents pages of versions .5 or .6. This is "Wars of Africa" being considered here. I would think that various military-related articles from the excellent Apartheid and History of Uganda series would be included in them. In any event, South African Border War is part of the Apartheid series, which provides infobox links to Sharpeville Massacre, Soweto Uprising and many more military articles which have to do with what was nearly a civil war. As far as South African Border War is concerned, it is listed on this page as "B-Class" and I know from tangential reading that there is a lot that was going on during the years leading up to 1989, which is the end date of the time covered by the article; I think that the change from something of a traditional white society to a very integrated high-tech era white society in RSA is an ongoing event and as such is developing on the Wikipedia as it unfolds; I mention this here because I am sure excellent work will be done on the pre and post 1989-1992 eras as integration continues. And, I am interested in this topic but unfortunately at this time, sitting here in New England, I feel I don't really have the chops to seriously update and write in time for the next release version. --McTrixie/Mr Accountable 19:28, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've not been involved in the release versions so am not sure about the limitations of the selection. Great Lakes refugee crisis (B) was created as a bridge between Rwandan Genocide and First Congo War. Another important article in recent Congolese conflicts is Banyamulenge (B). I had intended Rwandan Civil War (Start) to be an umbrella article for much of these, but the edit warring grew too annoying and the article is a mess. If one wanted at least some coverage of Uganda-Tanzania War and Ugandan Bush War, I would recommend the biography Yoweri Museveni (FA). - BanyanTree 23:27, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quick comment to address the above - we recently agreed that the V0.7 release will be around 30,000 articles. That sounds a lot, and it does mean we can include most of the above, but there is still some limit based on importance - Mauritania-Senegal Border War would perhaps lie outside the scope of the release, for example. Walkerma 03:28, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I suggest we focus of a dozen of articles (main wars and conflicts in Africa) and enhance them. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 18:19, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The agreed selection from the original list

[edit]

Summary of the above comments, only on the original set of articles. Articles in bold are tentatively approved for Version 0.7; votes are given as FOR-AGAINST (as best as I can tell!).

I'm proposing to add this first batch (ONLY the articles in bold), then afterwards I'll lay out the other suggestions (such as Aldux's) so we can discuss them separately. Please make any objections known soon before they are included. Where the "jury was divided" I'll list the article again later for further discussion. Thanks for some excellent feedback.
