Warp tool in CS
[edit]Is there a reliable site that I can donwload a Warp-tool (CS2) plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS (not cs2)? Jamesino 01:43, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- What does the warp tool do in Gimp terms? I haven't used PS since 7. I also use Hugin for doing warpy things, it's very cool and it's opensource. freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ 18:18, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- The official Adobe website has a video showing what the warp tool does in its Photoshop section front page. Basically, it creates grid on the selected image and those has vertices that can be dragged to manipulate the picture. For example, it can be used to imprint a design on a wrinkled t-shirt. Jamesino 18:46, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Or, you could use the Liquefy tool, it does the same thing only more exact.

Freezer light
[edit]Why do refrigerators have lights but freezers not? --frothT C 02:27, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- My freezer has a light. It probably just depends on the model. --AstoVidatu 02:35, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Are you talking about the light that a tiny gnome turns on every time you open it? (I'm gonna find that gnome!) Yeah, you're right mine doesn't have one either. Maybe it's because of the ice that tends to form on the freezer walls would block it out all of the time, so the freezer people just don't bother. I have no idea though. Oskar 03:13, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I have never seen a freezer have a light that is not one of the "french-door" syles. What is up with that? — X [Mac Davis] (SUPERDESK|Help me improve)03:23, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I for one am very puzzled :? --frothT C 03:46, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm guessing that either the low temps would damage the light or that heat from the light might thaw the food. Here's an external light design that might work, by attaching a swing arm lamp to the freezer door:
+---------+ | | | FREEZER | | | +-+---------+ |D| |O| |O| |R| +-+ \ \/ LIGHT ----
StuRat 04:18, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- OR you could use a torch!--Light current 05:24, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- If your head is behind the lamp the lamp will obstruct your view and if it is before it will obstruct the light. Back to the design table. Try a 3D version this time. :) DirkvdM 05:10, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- The light would be closer to the door than shown. I just had to make it extra large to show up with ASCII art. You could also just open the door enough so the light isn't in the way. StuRat 13:41, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't buy either of those explanations. Flashlights work fine in very cold temperatures and since the light is only on when the door is open it wouldn't really affect (effect? that's one for WP:RD/L) the food. Not nearly as much as the warm air would anyway. I'm sticking to my "the ice covers it up" theory Oskar 04:31, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- The problem with the heat would be very localized right around the bulb. If you feel the end of the flashlight, you will find it is quite warm after even a short period on, certainly warm enough to thaw something frozen. Using a fluorescent light would solve that, but they don't tend to work well at low temps, taking a long time to start, etc. StuRat 05:03, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
My freezer has a light as well, only freezers I have ever seen without lights are those tiny ones ontop of the refrigenerators,Joneleth 04:28, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's also because freezers are often much smaller then refrigerators, and are usually packed crowded. There's not much point in having an internal light, as it would be obscured most of the time. In the refrigerator, there's much more free space so it can be lit up. – b_jonas 19:24, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure that a very high percentage of refrigerators don't have freezer lights. ._. --Proficient 05:52, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

- Indeed. That is a very vague question. Try sparknotes, search for something specific on google as described above, or use online textbooks. --Proficient 05:53, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Changing headlines with a static story
[edit]Last week I noticed how a headline changed throughout the day on 1 radio station (BBC4) without the story itself changing. It started off as john Reid warning Muslim parents to watch out for the "tell tale signs of brainwashing", then "signs of brainwashing" then "signs of being targeted by extremists" then "signs of brainwashing again". Why do the headlines change when the story hasn't? AllanHainey 09:07, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

size of cloths
[edit]In the Middle Ages England exported both wool (in sacks of 120 skins) and cloths. What was the size or area of these cloths? Presumably they were standardised, as were all weights and measures
- My impression of the Middle Ages was that standardization was quite laxly implemented, and also were slightly different from town to town. I don't know if that'd matter much for the export, if the merchandise took place in the country exported to, though. =S 惑乱 分からん 16:06, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Brussels:Wikipedia contradicts itself about European institution in Justus Lipsius building(!Belgians/Dutchspeakers can help!)
[edit]Hello,
Wetstraat, an article about an important street in Brussels, claims that the Justus Lipsius building houses the European Council. Justus Lipsius building itself backs this up.
But then take a look at this article on the Dutch Wikipedia about the "Raad van de Europsee Unie"(="Council of the European Union") [1] says "De Raad zetelt in Brussel, in het Justus Lipsiusgebouw" which is Dutch for "The Council resides in Brussels, in the Justus Lipsius building".
It is very important to point out that the "European Council", "Council of European Union"( and "Council of Europe") are ALL different things.
So what's going on? Which is wrong?
You might wonder why I don't address this issue on the Dutch Wikipedia instead, but I got in trouble for asking questions there... not only did I get in trouble there, some think that in fact my questions were no problem, and it's not completely clear who is in charge there. Seeing how often they remove questions or block users... I chose to play it safe for now... Evilbu 19:07, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- The Council of the European Union has as its address:
- Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat, 175
- B-1048 Brussels
- That is also the street address of the Justus Lipsius building. I believe the building also houses offices for directorates of the European Commission as well as for Europol. The European Council possibly has an office tucked away somewhere in the same building, even though it is not formally an agency of the EU. But it's not clear they need an office at all. --LambiamTalk 19:50, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- [Berlaymont building], which is located opposite of Justus Lipsius seems to be the European Commission headquarters. So if I understand you correctly, that English article about the Wetstraat should put the emphasis on the Council of the European Union, not the European Council? Evilbu 20:01, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- If you Google 'Council of the European Union', you get sent to consilium.europa.eu. This calls itself both "European Council" and "Council of the European Union", and notes "The meetings of the European Council usually take place in Brussels, in the Justus Lipsius building." Googling "European Council" only turns up the Wikipedia article. The Council of Europe goes to coe.int, and is in Strasbourg. The European Council is here, but finding a location where it says its meetings take place seems hard. Hope this provides some help. --Mnemeson 20:03, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, but in fact I'm only more confused now. Can't you just give me the links because I don't think we see the same things (maybe Google gives other stuff depending on location of the user) (I am well aware of Google's capabilities and I did use them first.)Evilbu 21:44, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sure, sorry. I've done some more research for this, and hopefully there are enough links here. Council of the European Union search. The first result is CONSILIUM. Selecting the English language version of this gives you a site where the banner at the top of the page reads "The Council of the European Union". If you select the menu item "Council", and go to "European Council", you get a page entitled "European Council", and the line "The meetings of the European Council usually take place in Brussels, in the Justus Lipsius building." This seems to reinforce the first line of your question.
- According to one of the lines in Council Configurations, "The Council's seat is in Brussels, where it meets several times a month (meetings are held in Luxembourg in April, June and October)." I believe at this point, it is talking about The Council of the European Union. What I can't find anywhere in the website is a note about where it is in Brussels they meet when they go there. Contact us only gives phone, fax and email, and all Information visits says about the building is that tours are not permitted, for security reasons. You might want to email them and ask, because to be honest, I'm drawing a blank. Sorry - do hope this was more helpful than the first one. --Mnemeson 22:04, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- (after edit conflict) This is the page with the address of the Council of the European Union, and this is the page that states the European Council meets in the Justus Lipsius building. The place where they meet is not obviously the same as where they are housed. A couple of years ago they stopped rotating the venue and agreed to meet henceforth in Brussels (see the article). So, apparently, they are offered meeting facilities there by the other Council. --LambiamTalk 22:07, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks to everyone who has helped here. It's still confusing! But... seeing the European Council is basically the heads of states getting together (who are all busy) do they need "housing", isn't it just that they fly into Belgium (unless their name is Guy Verhofstadt), meet in the Justus Lipsius building and then they're off again? It seems like the Council of the European Union spends some more time there and should definitely be mentioned in the articles Wetstraat and Justus Lipsius buildingEvilbu 11:05, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Building a computer
[edit]My computer can't play new games, and I want to get a new one. I have a budget of $500. Would it be better to build a computer, buy a premade one, or wait until I get more money?
Also, in general, if a person spends a fixed amount of money on a premade computer, and another person spends the same amount on parts and then builds their own computer, which computer will be better?
Thank you. --Man man 20:22, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Ive done it both ways. You get more for your money if you by a pre built one. THis assumes that it will do what you want. However, premade ones like Dell, HP etc are very difficult to upgrade whereas standard designs are more easily upgradable.--Light current 20:34, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- That's true, for only $500 you'll get much more power for your money if you get a Dell or something. But realize that you'll have to deal with all that OEM crap - dell's notorious unreliability for one. Of course, on $500 you're DEFINATELY not going to be able to play anywhere near "new" games, unless they're like chess or luxor or something. Also, make sure you get a desktop pc or that $500 will disappear fast --frothT C 20:48, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Even though I don't, what if I had $4000 or something. At that price, would building it yourself or buyng a premade one get a better computer? --Man man 21:01, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I dont know how hardcore gamers spend their money, but bearing in mind the compliants you see that 'such and such a machine' has no chance of running 'Master of the Universe version XXXX', it would seem that these people build their own machines with super duper graphic cards, megawatt cooling fans, and all the go faster stripes etc.--Light current 21:41, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- You actually get cheaper prices if you buy CPUs by the thousands, so buying a custom PC from distributors like Lenovo or Falcon Northwest would be preferrable (not to mention easier). For $2000 you can get a very good computer that will play any game, though probably not at the highest settings. A $4000 budget will get you a computer that will run every game out today at the absolute highest settings, and will still do that for a few years. --frothT C 23:11, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Have you considered upgrading your current computer ? $500 will buy a lot of memory and disk space, and a good graphics card, too, provided your old comp can accommodate it. StuRat 23:01, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- With $4,000 you should be able to get an Alienware system, I would think. Though I've never looked at their systems, I've heard they're supposed to be the best for gaming. Your milage may vary. Dismas|(talk) 04:25, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Which is a poor decision in my opinion, considering their high markup. One could easily create a good gaming machine for $1000 if they buy the components themselves, a great one for $2000, and a super-max-top-o-the-line for $3000-4000 or higher, depending on the specifics. Buying from companies like Falcon or Alienware is advocated by a lot of people, but it still seems that you can always build one more cheaply on your own. Budget or general-purpose systems are another story, and are definately cheaper from Dell et. all, but the second you get into "gamer" territory they all jack the prices up.
- Unlike an above comment, I would think that a $2000 computer, properly built, should play all of the recent games on maximum detail and a decent resolution (1280x1024 or maybe 1600x1200). Depending on the game, AA/AF could be tossed in as well. The only games I wouldn't be sure about are Oblivion, and possibly FEAR - their engines are frankly ineffecient hogs. Most other games would be fine until Vista and DX10 roll around. Of course, it does depend on your standards as far as framerate goes. I'm still happily using my $1300 CAD system that is three years old; the only game that runs slowly is Oblivion, and that's probably because I keep a lot of the settings up towards medium/high on account of it looking so purdy.
- Err, yeah, that's what I'd call a run-on reply. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 04:45, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- I was actually giving the price range for that high-markup effect from falcon, alienware, etc. Here's another bit of info: if you bought the absolute best PC (not server, which would be faster but dramatically more expensive) components available (Conroe EE, SLI/Crossfire with the newest cards, 8GB ram) it would probably cost you about $5000 dollars. The processor alone would be a thousand. But that would be one killer machine --frothT C 04:43, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- Building your own machine may be more expensive first time round, but it's better in the long run. My computer cost about £700 to build. A couple of years later (when I'd otherwise be buying a new machine) I bought a 64 bit chip and new mother board for about £100, and I bought extra RAM, PCI cards and a 160GB disk (for 2 hard drives) at the same time for another £100. The initial outlay may be more, but the successive upgrades are much cheaper. Go for it. Rentwa 19:43, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- Most hardcore gamers will build their own high end system and will not be ripped off by companies like Falcon Northwest, Dell, etc. --Proficient 05:10, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Cricket... PLEASE HELP!!
[edit]I'm a 16 year old male and I love to play cricket.... after 3 years of bowling my speed has increased to about 115km/h or 71mph.... I'm quite content with my speed but I wish to inquire what the average speed is for a 16 year old male.... and if possible I'd like to know how fast I may be able to bowl when I'm fully grown. Thank you

- Apparently you're medium fast. I don't know your percentile or anything --frothT C 23:16, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not a big fan of the term "medium fast" - or that it supposedly means something different to "fast medium". But that chart of bowling speeds really relates to top level (first class) cricket. I'm not sure where the OP is located (his IP is a Canadian one, but that may not signify) - but certainly in England a 16 year old who bowled at that pace would be considered quite fast for his age group. There's no reason why he shouldn't be able to bowl at somewhere around 80 mph by the age of 19 or so - which would be considered fast in most cricket below the first class level. - In any case, it doesn't matter if you bowl 90 mph if you can't put the ball where you want to. Look at Brett Lee's statistics compared to Glenn McGrath. --Robert Merkel 01:09, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
PS3
[edit]Should I purchase a Sony Playstation 3 at it's release, or wait until the price drops? I have sufficiant funds to pay for one, I am just wondering, will sony come out with a better version a few months later? And is the price drop large enough to worth waiting for? And does anybody know when the first price drop will be? I thank you for any answers. Яussiaп F 21:54, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- It would probably be a couple years. Anyway, you shouldn't get a PS3, they're going to be total suckage --frothT C 23:17, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Wow! When did they add that feature? Clarityfiend 00:20, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps you could add a "suckage" comparison to our Comparison of seventh-generation game consoles. Rockpocket 05:18, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

- I don't realy wanna start a console war right here on the Referance desk. And certainly not just because you are denying the PS3's astronomical level of awesome-icity. Яussiaп F 00:29, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Is that quantifiable? What type of units would you use? Maybe Stephen Colberts? In any case, there will be a price drop, but I have no idea when or how much. Considering the (also astronomical) price, one could hope that it would be soon. Last I checked they were selling it on a loss though, so it might take longer than you hope. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 05:58, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- More like Steven Hawkings. --frothT C 13:50, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

- Looking at the Playstation 2, it took about a 1 1/2 years for a price drop. I'd say 1 1/2 or even 2 years would be a good bet based on how much money they're losing on this console. It will probably be a $100 drop as that seems to be common for consoles. I doubt a new version will come out between those 2 years. If there is one, the difference will most likely be transparent(e.g. a simplified IC design).
- Whether its worth the money or waiting is up to you. I wouldn't buy into the hype. Look at the launch titles. Is there any of those that is a must have for you? Or do you really want a super nice AV multimedia HD wifi-enabled gaming device? If either of those are yes, I say go for it. If not, wait for a price drop or a killer game to come out for it that way you'll feel good about your purchase. Mitaphane talk 08:14, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- Just buy it if you want it. --Proficient 05:12, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- compare the price of the ps3 (which has a blu ray player in it) to sony's own stand alone blu ray player. as long as the ps3 player isnt terrible like the ps2 dvd player it may be worth it just for that, Sosobra 04:03, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
