English spectators, 1966 World Cup soccer final

[edit]

Hello. Can anyone tell me approximately how many English fans there were on the day of the final? I think the German ones were between 10,000 and 20,000. Thank you very much. 93.41.96.86 (talk) 15:45, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the attendance was 96,924 [1], but I imagine that most of the tickets would have been purchased before the identity of the finalists was known, so it might be difficult to estimate how many spectators were actually England supporters and how many were neutral. This image shows that German and English fans were mixed-in together (BTW, the mysterious red and white flag is probably Polish, even though Poland was not competing, see this previous RefDesk thread). Poland
Hesse
The red and white flag is more likely the flag of Hesse, one of the states of Germany.  --Lambiam 09:11, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that makes sense. Nobody spotted that the last time around. Alansplodge (talk) 16:19, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not Monaco or Indonesia? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:06, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Monaco
Indonesia
Unlikely; the West German länder seems more likely at a match between West Germany and England; than do flags of Poland, Monaco, or Indonesia. --Jayron32 18:15, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the UK was at war with Indonesia in 1966. Alansplodge (talk) 10:45, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Detail of the 2003 Juventus - Milan Champions League final

[edit]

Hello. I don't think it will have escaped most people's notice, especially those who saw the match live at the stadium but also on television, a detail of the entrance of the two teams onto the pitch. These entered, pass me the term, in a 'mirror' manner with their backs to the benches. This is something I have never seen again in any other Champions League final. Can anyone tell me why? I thank you 93.41.96.86 (talk) 22:56, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
