[edit]question about Visa gift cards
[edit]Hi. If I ask my American friend to send me a Visa gift card for Xmas and if she mails it to me, will it work in Canada? Can the money be converted? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.180.24.220 (talk) 00:22, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- The FAQ's on the Visa Canada site (last question on the page) [1] mentions that there are two types of cards, some that are for domestic use only and are labeled "Valid only in Canada", and others that work internationally. I can't find an equivalent page for Visa USA but it's likely that some similar criteria exist there as well, so your American friend should make sure he purchases a card that can be used internationally. For greater certainty, you or he should call Visa's customer service department. Xuxl (talk) 15:12, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- The relevant US FAQ question is on this page: "If your gift card states Valid only in the United States on the front, your issuer has issued a Domestic Use Only card. Although your gift card will not be accepted at locations outside of the United States, it's welcome at millions of locations within the U.S. where Visa Debit cards are accepted." The places I can confirm don't appear to issue international Visa gift cards are Gift Card Mall and Walmart and GiftCards.com (and maybe Vanilla as well... that's all the issuers of US cards that it seemed could conceivably work outside the US). I've also found this on GiftCards.com that implies getting US gift cards that work internationally could be difficult in general due to some US regulations. - Purplewowies (talk) 19:39, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
