Brimingham Hall, Derbyshire

[edit]

I occasionally correct mis-spellings of "Birmingham", I have been leaving "Brimingham Hall" - as I believed it was correct (I assume I must have done some research when I first did the task). I noticed today that there were no occurrences of "Brimingham Hall" on the wiki. At least one has been changed. Can anyone confirm or deny that "Brimingham Hall" in Derbyshire exists or existed? I found "R. G. Coke, of Brimingham Hall, Derbyshire." via google books, but there is no preview, and this too could be a typo. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 18:06, 28 May 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Google only finds the phrase in some old versions of our article, Harry MacDonald (cricketer); "MacDonald married Lilian Margaret Coke of Birmingham Hall, Derbyshire in 1887 and settled at Bathford, near Bath" (it was previously "Brimingham Hall" but was amended in July 2019).
It is referenced to the Charterhouse Register, 1872-1910 on a genealogy website which I can't access, but I managed to track it down here (p. 109) which does indeed say "Brimingham". However, this may well by a typo since Google is unable to show me any other reference to "Brimingham Hall". Alansplodge (talk) 18:40, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't help much, but the ancestral home of the Derbyshire Coke family seems to be Trusley Manor. [1] Alansplodge (talk) 18:48, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Correction, the father of THIS Coke was born at Brookhill Hall - the first two letters are right anyway. Alansplodge (talk) 18:54, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, in case you get bored with "Birmingham", here are 139 good alternatives. fiveby(zero) 19:02, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have a similar list for my surname, over the centuries. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 23:11, 29 May 2020 (UTC).[reply]
I suspect it is a typo for "Brimington Hall"; see D'Ewes Coke, which places the Coke family in Brimington. His father-in-law, George Heywood of Brimington, is described here as being "of Birmingham Hall", but here as "of Brimington Hall". Coke's wife Hannah must have inherited the property.  --Lambiam 20:00, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well done. Brimington Hall - A Talk By Philip Cousins: "This fine Jacobean house stood in the centre of Brimington on the green area at the junction of Manor Road with the aptly named Hall Road. It was mostly demolished in the 1920s. This illustrated talk will explore the history of the building and some of the people who lived there including the Foljambe, Heywood, Coke and Markham Families". "After Rev. D’Ewes Coke died the Totley and Dore Estates reverted to his wife Hannah and were administered by her sons D’Ewes and John. The main family estates were inherited by eldest son D’Ewes, and second son William inherited the small estates of Brimington and Tapton". [2] Alansplodge (talk) 11:18, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great, Thanks everyone. I'm pretty certain there was more than one occurrence but I can't find the others. I'll correct any aI come across. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 23:08, 29 May 2020 (UTC).[reply]
I have created a history section at Brimington#History and have wikilinked Brimington Hall to that. Alansplodge (talk) 15:42, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved

Footnote: Google have unlocked the Carthusians' register, at my request. Turns out they have two copies (possibly different editions), and as referenced above Hathi turst have one. It's also on Wikisource... All the best: Rich Farmbrough 14:06, 31 May 2020 (UTC).[reply]
