[edit]Japanese pronoun
[edit]What pronoun does Venom use for himself in the Japanese dub of the Marvel films? Duomillia (talk) 00:50, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Ore, as you can hear here. Nardog (talk) 07:44, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Mandarin apostrophe question
[edit]Since 2012, China's government has allowed nü and lü to be written as nyu and lyu in the "diacritic-unfriendly" environment of passports. When these variants are used, is there any provision for how to distinguish a sequence like hanyu from hanü? Would one or the other be written han'yu or ha'nyu? Or is this problem considered marginal enough to simply be ignored? Lazar Taxon (talk) 02:25, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- While I don't know the answer, it seems to me that han·yu would be the default interpretation, so that one won't see han'yu. Note that similar ambiguities exist in the transliteration of Japanese; for the manga title はにゅたん男だぞ we see the potentially ambiguous part both in disambiguated form by using Ha'nyu [1] or left ambiguous.[2] --Lambiam 09:29, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Actually it appears I've found my answer: according to this official guidance from 2011, apostrophes aren't used at all in the "passport variation" of pinyin (e.g. "XINGEN" for Xing'en). Lazar Taxon (talk) 15:40, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- By the way, Kim Yuna would have been "Kim Yeon-a", except for shenanigans at the passport office... AnonMoos (talk) 05:09, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
