[edit]Value of startups
[edit]If Jane creates a startup with 1,000,000 stock units, and sells one unit for $1,000 to hisher good friend Bob, does that mean she's a billionaire now? Bumptump (talk) 16:12, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think you're going to get a definitive answer (though the practical answer is obviously "No"). Our article Billionaire says
Different authorities use different methodologies to determine net worth and to rank them, and not all information about personal finances is publicly available
, which seems to preclude a simple definition. ColinFine (talk) 16:41, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- If she only sold one, then she's a thousandaire. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:23, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Well, yeah, but the point of the question is that the only stock sold was valuated at $1,000/share. If she has 1,000,000 more (or 999,999 more, I guess), wouldn't that mean that she's got a billion dollars worth of stock? Matt Deres (talk) 18:01, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- I strongly doubt that the private sale of one share - particularly to an insider - is enough to establish the true market value of the corporation, but I am not a stockbroker. I'm with Bugs on this: the only thing we can say for certain is that she's a thousandaire. Xuxl (talk) 18:20, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Perhaps a "paper billionaire". See paper wealth for some relevant context. Abuse of this kind of accounting played a big role in the Enron scandal. --Amble (talk) 20:03, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Did Jane just change gender mid-sentence? Clarityfiend (talk) 09:32, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- The gender of the possessive pronoun agrees with its object, haven't you read English As She Is Spoke? —Tamfang (talk) 15:56, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hilário! This word (provided by Google Translate) is claimed by some not to exist [1]. The English equivalent "hilarious" only acquired its second "i" in 1823. 2A00:23C5:E103:3301:981C:8E9E:EF8A:8BB7 (talk) 12:24, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- More likely Jane has $1000 and Bill has a share of an unsaleable stock. - Jmabel | Talk 03:06, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

How to make wild salmon more palatable?
[edit]I'd love to do my part for fish sustainability, but wild (Pacific) salmon has a far stronger flavor and less fat than farmed (Atlantic) salmon. For me, it's far less palatable. Like other strongly flavored fish, is this a probably hopeless cause? Thank you. 68.174.155.22 (talk) 22:26, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- There must be someone who likes it that way. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 23:34, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- While on an Alaskan cruise last year, the locals repeatedly told me how their salmon was much tastier than that bland garbage from over east. HiLo48 (talk) 00:50, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Try cooking it with lots of butter, herbs, and garlic. This works for almost anything. DuncanHill (talk) 00:09, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- How would that stuff make it taste less strong? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:52, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- OP said wild salmon was less palatable. The suggestion was for something to make it more palatable. DuncanHill (talk) 16:41, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Then why bother with the salmon? Just make a soup of butter, herbs and garlic. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:44, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

- Speaking for myself, I would prefer that people who don't like it would just not eat it. I personally like very fishy fish, the fishier the better. I feel a little bit bad about eating animals at all, but if I didn't even enjoy them? Reminds me of the fish that Arthur Dent tossed out, that turned out to be the guy he'd killed in scores of incarnations. --Trovatore (talk) 02:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure how depleting a native species is supposed to be better for sustainability than using a farmed product, but as Trovatore says, why bother? I like some salmon now and then, but I figure anything from the ocean these days is full of toxins, so I keep it infrequent. - Salmon farming reduces the survival of survival of wild salmon and trout,[2] so using a farmed product is not good for sustainability. --Lambiam 11:25, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
