- Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon? (Hopefully not Obscured by Clouds!) {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.12.69.184 (talk) 17:59, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

- NPR has Dancing In The Dark: 30+ Songs To Enjoy During The Solar Eclipse. (Note, they're not all about a solar eclipse, but they all fit the event, and I think it's a fun list). ---Sluzzelin talk 20:23, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- Pink Floyd's "Eclipse" is most apt, esp. for the line "...and the sun is eclipsed by the moon...". Go for "Blues for the Red Sun" by Kyuss too. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:43, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
Precursors of film genre
[edit]did Precursors of film (pre-cinema) have genres?--2001:B07:6463:31EE:C5B1:714B:599B:25B (talk) 15:43, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- It seems as though there were a few. Have you seen this WP article: Precursors of Film? Maineartists (talk) 16:36, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- yes, but it don't talk about genres--5.169.158.161 (talk) 17:21, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- It "don't"? What would Zoetrope be classified as, if not a genre: pre-film animation? What exactly do you classify as "pre-film" and "genre"? This is just one example within the article; do some digging. Maineartists (talk) 17:27, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

- Early film wasn't narrative, and so didn't have proper genres. A genre is a style of artwork, and early film consisted mostly of "point the camera at something and film it." The development of the "language of filmmaking" and the associated genres really got going with early narrative films. There's an excellent online class on early film-making at Crash Course. You can find it here. I suggest you watch it, it will answer a lot of your questions. Also, genres are not immutable laws of the universe which all people agree on exactly how to categorize every single exemplar perfectly into a fixed set of categories; so there's not really a perfect way to answer your question. I suppose one could define genres for early film like "films about trains arriving at stations" or "films of scantily clad women frolicking" or "films about horses" or stuff like that. Early films were rarely more than a minute or two in length, shown to individual patrons through Kinetoscopes and Nickelodeons. The article on Nickelodeons actually discusses some of the subject matter of these early films, which I suppose on could call "genres". Just don't treat it as a definitive closed list, or as an immutable set or anything. --Jayron32 19:49, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- Magic lanterns were used for travelogues[1] and Phantasmagoria, for example. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:10, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
