Foul

[edit]

Despite after reading your article about the subject, I still could not grasp the concept of the bonus situation in basketball. Could you please clarify the rules of the situation? 71.146.19.40 (talk) 02:21, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The rules vary at different levels of the game. But they are all based on the same idea. Classically speaking, a foul committed on someone who is not in the act of shooting, normally calls for 1 free-throw attempt. Once a team has committed some minimum number of fouls, the free throw is called a 1-and-1, or 1-and-bonus, meaning that if you make the first one, you get to try a second one. The specifics of this are now somewhat different at the college level. But that's the basic idea. If that's unclear, perhaps you could explain more fully what it is that you find confusing. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:24, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here's how the bonus works: a foul can occur in one of two situations: when the player with the ball is attempting a shot, or when they are not. If a player is fouled while attempting a shot, there are two options:
  • If they are fouled and missed the shot, they get two free throws
  • If they are fouled and made the shot, they get one extra free throw
If the foul occured and the fouled player wasn't trying to take a shot, then the ball is taken to the nearest sideline and play starts on an in-bounds pass. UNLESS the team which committed the foul had committed their limit of fouls. If a team is over the limit for fouls, that puts the other team on the bonus. When they are on the bonus, every foul results in free throws, even if the foul occured and there was no other shot being attempted. So, being "in the bonus" just means your team gets to take free throws every time they are fouled, and not just when fouled while trying to take a shot. --Jayron32 06:12, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. 71.146.19.40 (talk) 20:06, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I understand now and I appreciate your explanation. 71.146.19.40 (talk) 20:06, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Abstract album covers

[edit]

I saw this mention on Floydian Slip's web site for the artwork of David Marsh. He has a number of well known album covers done using pantone color swatches here. I recognize some of the covers but not all of them. So, I'm looking for some help identifying them.

(Please fill in the gaps and sign when you update, please)

  1. Aladdin Sane - David Bowie
  2. Atom Heart Mother - Pink Floyd
  3. Country Life - Roxy Music (Sluzzelin)
  4. The Man-Machine - Kraftwerk (Sluzzelin)
  5. At Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash
  6. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan
  7. George Best - The Wedding Present (Jayron32 + ny156uk (talk) 08:13, 29 April 2012 (UTC))[reply]
  8. Hardcore UproarTogether (matt (talk) 09:45, 29 April 2012 (UTC))[reply]
  9. Horses - Patti Smith (Sluzzelin)
  10. Island Life - Grace Jones (Sluzzelin)
  11. Let It Be - The Beatles
  12. London Calling - The Clash
  13. Motörhead - Motörhead (Sluzzelin)
  14. Nevermind - Nirvana
  15. Odelay - Beck
  16. One Step Beyond... - Madness (Sluzzelin)
  17. Parallel Lines - Blondie
  18. Queen II - Queen
  19. Remain in Light - Talking Heads
  20. Rubber Soul - The Beatles
  21. Screamadelica - Primal Scream (Jayron32 + Sluzzelin)
  22. "Shakespeare's Sister" - The Smiths (Baseball Bugs)
  23. Specials - The Specials (Sluzzelin)
  24. The White Album - The Beatles (Jayron32) ... or, more likely: Still - Joy Division (Michig)
  25. "The Modern World" – The Jam (matt (talk) 09:52, 29 April 2012 (UTC))[reply]
  26. "True Faith" - New Order (ny156uk (talk) 08:13, 29 April 2012 (UTC))[reply]
  27. Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division (AlexiusHoratius + Michig)
  28. War - U2
  29. Weasels Ripped My Flesh - Frank Zappa (Baseball Bugs + Sluzzelin)
  30. With The Beatles - The Beatles

Number 22 obviously says "The Smiths" but I don't know which album it is. 3, 4, 9, 13, 23, 25, and 26 look really familiar and I know I've seen them before but can't place them. Any help? Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 02:47, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The next-to-last one is Weasels Ripped My Flesh. There is a Category:Album covers. You might be able to skim through those and find some more. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:32, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Smiths item is from something called "Shakespeare's Sister".[1]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:37, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

27 might be Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division but I'm not 100% sure. That one is a bit hard to tell. AlexiusHoratius 04:10, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Added what I could figure out with my google-fu to the list...though just noticed that Jayron has already answered the George Best cover one. ny156uk (talk) 08:13, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, The White Album doesn't quite fit alphabetically — but nearly! Could it still be it? I see some non-white pixels, but maybe it's based on a dirty copy. I took the liberty of filling in the gaps on the list according to the suggestions here and added the names of those who answered them. (Not that it's important, but the OP requested it). Thanks for the Sunday puzzle, Dismas. These abstractions would make for a good picture round in a pub quiz. ---Sluzzelin talk 11:29, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
24 could be Still if based on the original LP cover - looks around the right shade of grey. --Michig (talk) 11:38, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aha! Very good. Added it to the list. ---Sluzzelin talk 11:52, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The official title of the white album is "The Beatles", which does fit alphabetically. The shade of grey points towards "Still" but I'm not sure whether that cover is as iconic as the others. --Wrongfilter (talk) 13:16, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Urgh! I knew 26 was New Order (given that many of the others were British indie/alt bands from the 1980s, it seemed likely), and I thought I remembered that cover, but I couldn't find it among the New Order albums. Forgot it was a single cover. Urgh. And even more annoying is that I own that Specials album, and still couldn't place it. Did google searches on every punk and new wave band I remembered from the early 80s, and never got to third wave ska. I even thought of Fun Boy Three for that one, but it wasn't them. That's how close I got: knew the band members, but got the wrong specific band. Don't get old kids, it destroys your mind. 10 years ago and I'd've probably gotten all of these. --Jayron32 18:23, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And all those "urgh"s tell me you've reverted not just back to childhood, but all the way back to your Neanderthal roots. See, I'm not the only one.  :) -- ♬ Jack of Oz[your turn] 19:50, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to everyone for the assistance!! Definitely some in there that are fairly obscure. And the Patti Smith cover! I knew it was a woman but couldn't get Chrissie Hynde out of my mind. Thanks again! Dismas|(talk) 09:49, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Movie about paranoid guy

[edit]

What's that movie with the beardy guy who is very paranoid and trapped in his house and has all kinds of weird ideas? I saw it long ago but I don't remember almost anything. I would love to rewatch it. Estimated release year: between 1990-1998. I think it turned out that he was right in being paranoid in the end and that was the message of the film. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cxxxxxxxxx34e2 (talkcontribs) 16:50, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if Mel Gibson had a beard in that movie, but it sounds like Conspiracy Theory. Adam Bishop (talk) 20:31, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Watched it now. Not the one I meant. Sorry.

Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window? Oh sorry just written than and saw the release date timeframes...ignore me. ny156uk (talk) 21:49, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The description is a bit vague, but could plausibly apply to Pi (film), which came out in 1998. Meelar (talk) 22:20, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nope.
Arlington Road, perhaps? Tevildo (talk) 23:30, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Will watch today.
They did a remake of Rear Window in 1998, where the main character is trapped in the house (due to being handicapped), but he wasn't bearded. RudolfRed (talk) 03:34, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not that one either.

wich insect produces the loudest buzz when it flies?

[edit]

i have a question to you guys and womens out there: i heard different insect flying but wich one is the loudest when it flies? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saludacymbals (talkcontribs) 18:12, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bumblebee ? StuRat (talk) 21:12, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I once saw a large wasp-like insect (I was never able to find out what it was and I've never seen another) that had the loudest buzz I've ever heard. Much louder than a buzzing bee and of a lower frequency. The critter was about two inches long, with some of that being a long stinger/ovipositor (I assumed 'stinger' and beat a retreat). If anyone knows of a good 'pictures of wasps of the UK' page, I'll try pointing it out, now that I've thought about it again. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 21:45, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The European hornet is a big wasp-like bugger that flies around the UK in the late summer; it certainly does make a loud buzzing noise. Another loud UK contender in spring is the Cockchafer. I would imagine that there are a great many insects in warmer contries that make British bugs look a bit puny. Dragonflies are quite big but very quiet. Alansplodge (talk) 23:21, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I found Pond insect 'loudest animal on Earth' about the Lesser water boatman, but it's a mating call rather than flight noise. Alansplodge (talk) 23:27, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Horseflies are noisy as well as nasty. --TammyMoet (talk) 09:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think the Dynastes hercules is also loud? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saludacymbals (talkcontribs) 11:57, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Other insects whose flight is very loud are the cicada, and the cicada killer, but I think it will be impossible to give a reliable source for "the loudest"SemanticMantis (talk) 19:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC) p.s. this type of question would be better served at the science desk.[reply]
Yes, I vote for the cicada killer as well. 71.183.76.14 (talk) 14:01, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One possibility = Florida woods cockroach (yes, a cockroach that flies...bigun, too...sweet dreams...) Also, possibly the June Bug. They have an annoying tendency to "buzz" near your face, so maybe they just sound loud. Quinn SUNSHINE 01:21, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
