Book identification

[edit]

A few years ago, I read on a website, most likely Wikipedia, the summary of a book that opens by introducing a seemingly-utopian world. It is eventually revealed that the society has abandoned art, literature, and science. The book soon becomes dystopian.

I was sure that this book was Brave New World, but after I started reading it, I realized the first chapter does the opposite of portraying an ideal society. The more pleasant side of the World State isn't revealed until later. What is, then, this mysterious book whose name I didn't remember correctly? --99.237.96.81 (talk) 02:20, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At the risk of being obvious (& unhelpful...), how do Farenheit 451 or A Canticle for Leibowitz sound? TREKphiler hit me ♠ 03:04, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If those aren't it, perhaps Category:Dystopian novels could be a place to browse through titles... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 03:48, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Leibowitz?! Have you read both Leibowitz and the question? —Tamfang (talk) 07:11, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The society of the Eloi in The Time Machine fits the description. Clarityfiend (talk) 11:16, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So does Lois Lowry's The Giver, and possibly Gathering Blue. I'm not sure about the second title. Vltava 68 (talk contribs) 22:59, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Time Machine opens in present-day (i.e. Victoria-era) England, although the main part of the story is set among the Eloi and this part is something like the description given. --Anon, 02:33 UTC, November 2, 2008.

"Cans of mace" song

[edit]

Here's an alternative song I've heard hundreds of times. Yet when I try googling the lyrics, I get zero hits.

You can be my someone, and you can ease my pain I know that I can save you from all the things unclean [Another line here] The chemicals between us, well, that's not very far!

Can you take it all away? (or throw it all away?) Can you take it all away? Will you shove it in my face Slimy cans of mace

I'm not quite sure the word is "slimy", but it's something "cans of mace". Google searches are coming up fruitless. Wiwaxia (talk) 06:25, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bush "Chemicals between us". Got it first hit in google! and it appears to be "powers can amaze". http://www.lyrics007.com/Bush%20Lyrics/Chemicals%20Between%20Us%20Lyrics.html -- SGBailey (talk) 09:46, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See also Bush (band) and The Chemicals Between Us. Cheers! --Jayron32.talk.contribs 14:59, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're mishearing the lyrics. This sounds like Blurry by Puddle of Mudd

You could be my someone you could be my scene you know that i will save you from all of the unclean I wonder what you're doing I wonder where you are There's oceans in between us but that's not very far

Can you take it all away can you take it all away well you shoved it in my face this pain you gave to me Can you take it all away can you take it all away well you shoved it my face

You can see the video on youtube at [1] (Copyright lawyers - this is the official Universal Music Channel so it's an authorised video)

Does this help? Exxolon (talk) 15:17, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's it! Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.
I googled blurry "puddle of mudd" "cans of mace" but got no results. Are you sure "cans of mace" aren't the real words? Wiwaxia (talk) 23:58, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
100% sure. I'm not sure how you're hearing anything about chemicals or cans of mace in this song - the vocals are pretty distinct by modern alternative music standards. Exxolon (talk) 06:01, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I didn't remember what the words before "between us" were. It could be anything "between us". I guess Bush's song just filled in my blank. As for the cans of mace, this may have been a mondegreen based on expecting a rhyme (I was expecting to hear something that rhymed with "face" after the line "well you shoved it in my face", and my ears filled it in for me). Harry Potter

[edit]

1. This page mentions the "Japanese golfer joke" in Chamber of Secrets. But is that really the joke?

2. What is the course they play at in the joke?

How did they do the Dallas scene? I saw Bobby's portrayer in the credits, but are they look a likes? Or are they the actors?!?! Because those actors look far different now. Or is it voice syncing and editing or something? SGGH speak! 14:20, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Make-up is a wonderful thing. DirecTV has been running adds for years that do the same thing; reshooting scenes from classic movies using the same actors but saying different lines. If you compare the scenes side-by-side with the original, you can clearly see that the actors in the remake are older, but when you don't have the original to run it next to them, it certainly looks exactly like the original version. So the effect is achieved with a combination of good make-up, and our own imperfect memory... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 14:53, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it should be noted that Da Boom was filmed in 1999; nine years ago, Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal looked much more like they did in their Dallas days than they do now. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 14:57, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About A.T.O.M.: Alpha Teens On Machines...

[edit]

Would there be a 3rd season of A.T.O.M.? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sirdrink13309622 (talkcontribs) 21:05, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
