Local Network Question (again)

[edit]

A week or two ago, I asked about accessing a folder on my desktop computer from my laptop computer, and was advised to set up a local network. I have enabled sharing on a folder on the desktop computer. Then, when I try to do a Map Network Drive on the laptop computer, Windows Security tells me to enter my user ID and password. I know what my user ID is. That isn't the problem. I use a PIN to log on to the desktop computer, and that doesn't work for a cross-computer login. I think I remember what the password was, but that doesn't work, so my guess is that I don't remember what the password was when I was using a password. I am guessing that I need to reset the password on the desktop computer. What command sequence do I use on the desktop computer to reset the password without affecting my ability to use the desktop computer? All that I want to change is that I want to be able to log on to the desktop computer (as if it were a local server) from my laptop computer.

You presumably can avoid all this by setting the access permission (Security tab) for this folder to "Everyone". Ruslik_Zero 20:15, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
User:Ruslik0 - Well, it looks as it is set to Everyone. There is a link on the Sharing tab called "I'm having trouble sharing". When clicked, it opens this web page:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/file-sharing-over-a-network-in-windows-10-b58704b2-f53a-4b82-7bc1-80f9994725bf I haven't yet reviewed the web page, except to note that it does state that Microsoft made a lot of changes to sharing, including getting rid of HomeGroup. I will review the page in more detail and follow up. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:17, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The trick turns out to be under Change Advanced Sharing Options, go down to All Networks, and then Turn Off Password Protected Sharing. Password Protected Sharing seems to be something that doesn't work across computers, at least not with regular Windows 10. Robert McClenon (talk) 22:51, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
