[edit]Access to gmail via the web - Safari on iPad
[edit]Yes, I searched both this reference desk and internet websites. No luck. So, after Microsoft highjacked my iPad Air2 and installed Win10 without my permission, I now cannot access gmail through the internet. The page stops loading. No, I don’t want to download an app for that. I want to access my email through the web, not through someone else’s interface. Any ideas? DOR (HK) (talk) 09:20, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- Could you clarify your issue, DOR (HK)? In particular, which web browser are you using, which page (give the URL) "stops loading" and how does it do so (blank page, takes forever to load, gives an error message...)?
- I suppose you can access other internet pages without particular issues. TigraanClick here to contact me 18:27, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
- It would also help if you clarify exactly what you are doing. Microsoft cannot install Windows 10 on your iPad Air 2. Even you probably couldn't. Are you running Windows 10 on your desktop or laptop or some other computer and using remote desktop on the iPad to access that computer? Are you confused about what computer or tablet you are using? Are you using a new version of iOS (I guess 10) made by Apple and have confused it for Windows 10? Nil Einne (talk) 03:13, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
OP here. Sorry for the confusion about Win10. It's the iPad upgrade that's causing mischief. Version 10.0.2 (14A456). After the "upgrade," Safari opens as usual and all other pages load without noticeable problems. Gmail -- either the previously open page, or an new attempt (e.g., http://mail.google.com) just won't load. It opens fine in the actual Mail app, but not in the browser. The line at the top (underneath the URL) that indicates progress toward loading the page quickly runs most of the way across, then disappears. I'm left with a white page, no content. - No problem. I changed the thread title, if you do not mind.
- Another question: when you try https://mail.google.com, are you redirected, i.e. does the URL change in the address bar?
- The URL remains mail.google.com (with extra bits to indicate my own gmail account). DOR (HK) (talk) 11:49, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Further diagnosis tools:
- Try accessing the page with another browser (e.g. Firefox).
- I don't have Firefox on my iPad ... didn't know I could! DOR (HK) (talk) 11:49, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- If 1. fails, try to ping
mail.google.com
(that puff piece has tool suggestions). If even that fails, the issue is not related to Safari. - If 1. is successful, "load" the blank page, then access the HTML code. The way to go is to tick Preferences -> Advanced -> "show developer menu", then right-click on the page and "show page source". It will probably be empty or almost empty, meaning the browser failed to load the page, but there is a slight chance that it actually does load the page contents and the problem is on the display side.
- Disclaimer: I have not tested any of those (no Apple, no Safari). TigraanClick here to contact me 15:08, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
