Wikipedia:Portal peer review/Indonesia/archive1
Appearance
I am requesting a peer review as this is my first time doing major work on a portal. This was previously featured, but delisted for not being maintained. I've made it pretty much fully automated.
- Contents:
- 17 selected article
- 17 selected biographies
- 17 did you know sets
- 17 selected pictures
- An in this month section
I'd like feedback to make this featured again. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:44, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- Comments. I'm not exactly an authority having only begun working on my first portal today so I'm going to go through the individual elements for prose or layout without too much emphasis on the whole ensemble, if that helps.
- Might sound a bit silly, but the intro box does feature heavy repetition of the name "Indonesia", which could be cut down. For example "The Dutch ruled Indonesia for more than 300 years and in 1942, the Japanese arrived in Indonesia and ruled for three years. Indonesia declared its independence from the Japanese on 17 August 1945" is three times in two sentences; try "The Dutch ruled the country for more than 300 years until 1942, when the Japanese arrived and established a three-year rule. Indonesia declared its independence from the Japanese on 17 August 1945."
- Trimmed
- The inter-language box (which is a great idea) might be best situated closer to the wikimedia box, currently it creates a bit too much blank space to one side. Centring it would also combat this.
- Moved, but that creates a bit of white space on my (admittedly small) monitor.
- The header in Portal:Indonesia/Selected articles2 either has one too many or one too few apostrophes, not sure if you wanted italics or bolding there.
- Fixed.
- Komodo (island) seems conspicuously absent as a link in Portal:Indonesia/Selected articles2/5.
- Fixed.
- Looking at the list of selected articles, I'm seeing ones which are start-class, while there are FA-class articles within the scope of the portal which are missing (of your own contributions alone there's another two at least), and plenty of GA-class material too. I don't know if 17 is a number of significance or just the point you felt like stopping at so you could either augment that number or switch out some of the lower-graded articles for higher ones instead. In fact, now that I check, WP:ID has exactly 17 FAs, which is oddly fortuitous, though there's obviously overlap there with the biographies; though the same principle applies there too.
- That will require discussion at the project page; the old featured portal emphasised topical importance. As Indonesia became independent on 17 August, I decided 17 was good enough. I'd certainly be able to add more (I could get something like 30 DYK sets from just my own contributions)
- That makes sense, then, if 17 is significant then stick with it. Focusing on the selection rather than the number would still make for some improvement, and I'd be happy to pitch in if you need to raise a discussion with WP:ID. GRAPPLE X 22:06, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

- That's really all I picked up on, to be honest. I could comb through the selected blurbs again if you'd like but on the whole I think everything's well put-together. GRAPPLE X 03:59, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the review! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:20, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- Would it be possible to introduce a collapsible feature to the "Topics" box? It seems a bit blockish but I don't know if collapsing it would leave an empty space or pull the underneath content up. Might be worth looking into it but don't do it if it's dangerous or gets you all sticky.
- I'd have to ask the Rabbit. He eats and breathes templates. Agree that it looks terrible (hence why I removed the categories box before).
- Thinking again about the balance thing; if there was an image in every selected blurb this would also help push the shorter side down some more. For instance, the blurbs for Toraja and Clara Ng have no images but File:Célèbes 6543a.jpg would be great for the former and there are some looser connections to File:Kemayoran sta 100210-0840.jpg or File:OhioUnionFront.JPG for the latter.
- Toraja would work, but the buildings for Clara's article wouldn't really apply (not intrinsically part of the subject). I'll add a couple more pictures
- Is there any chance of another selected picture? It'd bring them up to 17 to match the other selections.
- The blurb for Iravan seems a bit short; the article itself is pretty substantial so another few sentences should be easy enough to glean.
- The same could be said of George McTurnan Kahin, though to be honest there might be better selections for a national portal than an American scholar on the subject. I'd drop either that or Alfred Russel Wallace; though the latter is probably an easier one to lose as the former is a Good Article.
- Wallace is an FA :-) Not our doing, but... K, I could replace Kahin with Anggun (don't have a female singer in there yet, and Anggun is a solid B that could easily pass GA if nominated).
- Totally missed that. Then stick with Wallace, his work seems more relevant and varied as it deals with the fauna and geography of the country rather than just politics. GRAPPLE X 03:12, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- I wouldn't be afraid to sprinkle a few red links in selections which warrant them (I'm currently looking at Ucu Agustin and thinking about those documentaries); given that the portal exists to showcase the subject and promote further editing within its scope, it might not be a bad idea to leave a few low-hanging fruits sitting there. - Sounds good.
- Comments
- Wikilink article's title in all the sections, like "Bali is an Indonesian island...".
- Will do tomorrow.
- Done.
- Create a new section for category tree (Category:Indonesia). Most featured portals have this section.
- There was something like that. I considered it hideous, so I removed it.
- Merged what was useful into the topics page
- Done.
- Why almost whole Asian is in "Related portals"? Limit it to ASEAN, more culturally related countries' portals (India or China perhaps).
- Good idea.
- A section for Indonesia related news from Wikinews will be a better addition. Wikinews Importer Bot can be used for this task.
- I'll look into this.
- Done. Please check for balance (looks unbalanced to me)
- It seems to me that the left hand boxes are wider than the right hand ones; if the two were of equal width I think the balance would be addressed somewhat. GRAPPLE X 01:50, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- A section for Indonesia related featured content.
- There's already Selected article and selected biography, a separate Featured content section would be redundant
