I've listed this article for peer review because... This summer will be the 10th anniversary of the event and it feels like it's time to prepare nominating it as a featured article candidate – I would appreciate any advice, as I haven't taken an article to FA before. This is the first article I wrote from scratch and has seen little editing since passing GA four years ago. Article is about 4,000 words.

  Thanks! Found the second downloadable at Dokumen.pub. In the scope of Danzig, it mainly talks about poverty and municipal social-assistance programs. More on expansion below.

• Some FAC reviewers prefer no citations in the lead.

  I was overcautious about citations when I first wrote it, unsure of what was likely to be challenged. Have removed most, keeping lead citations/endnotes for:

  • "worst mass shooting" which might change.
  • the quotation from the judicial finding

• Choppy paragraphing in some areas especially the "shooting" section. Other prose issues in places (not exhaustive):
  • "Ford called for longer prison sentences and decried "hug a thug" social programs, voting against accepting federal grants worth more than $16 million" it's not clear if he voted against or decried voting against
  • "17-year-old Folorunso Owusu" sentence shouldn't start with a numeral per MOS
• Unencyclopedic language:
  • "notoriously violent criminal gangs", "They terrorized Scarborough". I would avoid terrorize as a verb and "notorious" in wikivoice
  • "dramatic decrease in violent crime" -> "decrease in violent crime", or quantify the amount of decrease
• Inconsisent refs, for example:
  • some Toronto Star refs include "Toronto Star Newspapers Limited." as publisher, others don't. (I would omit consistently.)
  • Sometimes the location is included in cite news refs (I would omit consistently).
    • Removed |publisher= and |location= when obvious (eg: Toronto Star) but kept when ambiguous (eg: National Post).
  • You cite Toronto Star but Citynews.ca, not CityNews (both of these should be the name rather than the url, in my opinion).
    • Fixed. I kept Time.com to differentiate the website from the print magazine.
  • Some inconsistencies in whether date accessed is mentioned in cite news refs (I would consistently include, unless accessed via physical copy).
    • This should be fixed when I archived the references. There's just a few that use ProQuest which don't have an access date.

• I hadn't heard about this terrible event before and it was an informative read. I've really enjoyed watching Top Boy but I wish it didn't glorify this sort of violence, which is so sad for the people affected. By the way, I'm a Br-Eng user so please forgive any things that I'm querying that seem obvious to you. I'm mainly concerned with the prose.
• "but key recommendations to help keep at-risk youth from joining gangs had not been adopted" - suggest "but key recommendations to stop at-risk youth from joining gangs had not been adopted"
• " teenagers who decided to have a gunfight in the middle of a party" suggest " teenagers who then had a gunfight at a party" or similar
  • Done. That sentence was a bit long. I think I wanted to stress the recklessness of it, but that's adequately covered elsewhere.
• i don't think you really need the cites in the lead, assuming all info is repeated and cited below (if not, it should be). you could argue the direct quotes need cites and i wouldn't object to that
  • Agreed. I kept citations/footnotes for the quote of the judicial ruling and for "worst mass shooting".
• agree with buidhe on some on the language needing fixing eg terrorize
• "With the gang's leadership locked away" that's a jump from arrests, i'd like a sentence in the middle on convictions
  • Hmmm. According to the one source, the decrease in violent crime is linked to the arrests only. I probably added the "locked away" part (whether jailed and awaiting trial or convicted and imprisoned) to set context for that new paragraph. Reading further, most of those arrested were held in custody without bail (ProQuest 439120825), convictions did not begin until 2007, and the trial of the three gang leaders was in 2008–July 2009 resulting in life sentences (ProQuest 3330919932). Given that this is about a different event and only serves as background for the article, I don't know that I'd want a lot of detail in the text. What would you think about having a footnote at "locked away" and then I can detail it a bit with citations in the footnote?

• The paragraphs beginning "In Toronto, blockos are a form .." and "The 101-unit townhouse social housing complex " both feel like they need contextualizing more - I'd prob move them down into the event section
  • Not really sure what you mean. The GA version explains what things are in the background section, so that the Block party section isn't cluttered explaining about social housing, what had normally happened without incident and what's prohibited (for, say, American readers who might not realize it's odd or illegal to carry a handgun). The Background and Block party sections are roughly balanced by size.
• "Meanwhile, from 7 July the Twitter account @2ToneShorty, linked to 19-year-old Nahom Tsegazab,[12] a Galloway Boys member known as "Gifted",[27] had been promoting the gathering as a "HennessyBlock Party". " reads awkwardly to me, too many subclauses
  • Hmmm. I guess we don't need his nickname. How about: Meanwhile, from 7 July the Twitter account @2ToneShorty, linked to 19-year-old Galloway Boys member Nahom Tsegazab,[12][27] had been promoting the gathering as a "HennessyBlock Party".

  • Malvern Crew was redlinked by another editor; I personally don't find it likely that anyone's going to create that article. It's redlinked on first mention in the body, not the lead. Linked to Malvern, Toronto as it's a neighbourhood.
• "Shooting" - what a sad event! this section is choppy, sentences need to be pulled into paragraphs. the list of victims seems ok in terms of being a list but then on reflection I've got BLP concerns here becuase if it was an innocent / uncharged person then why have their name on wikipedia linking them to this event? and i dont thin the article needs the list ultimately. And then perhaps there are broader issues with naming - i probably wouldn't name any gang people unless they have been convicted
  • I tend to agree (per WP:Victim lists). I initially needed the victims list for a reliable count while constructing the article, because some sources included all injuries and some included the perpetrators (which were all but impossible to separate when they couldn't be named). With your agreement, I've removed the list. Do you think I should footnote to explain the disparities in pre-sentencing sources? (The count of shooting victims helps to verify whether this was the 'worst mass shooting in Toronto'.)

  • There's something like that in about five places in the article. The commas were added or removed in successive copyedits. Perhaps it's WP:ENGVAR. I don't think they're strictly necessary.
• "possibly stemming" sounds like original research, maybe better to say according to X
  • Unfortunately, I don't have an 'according to'. It's stated that TCHC residents can be evicted for housing someone with a gun, or for criminal or anti-social behaviour. Mesquito was in possession of a gun when he was arrested, and his mother (whom he was living with) was evicted for 'lease violation' within 12 days of his arrest. (I expect for privacy reasons that they don't release what the violation was.) What if I remove the possibly and state the 12-day timeframe, allowing readers to draw the conclusion. So change Later that summer Mesquito's family were evicted by TCHC for a lease violation, possibly stemming from these charges. → Within 12 days of his arrest, Mesquito's family were evicted by TCHC for a lease violation. I suppose I could footnote a bit more on it, but that probably isn't needed.

• "Naod was charged with the attempted murder of Owusu" it's not clear to me when Naod was arrested, during the house raid where the cocaine was found? - hmm no that was owusu's place which was raided. so when was Naod arrested?
  • Based on when news was published, Naod and Owusu were each arrested between 2 and 5 September.(ref name="ApplebyShot") Neither of their names could be published at the time, so it's difficult to check. Naod was charged with gun-related offences on the 4th (same source), so he was arrested on the 4th or earlier.
  • I ran a broad search for those three days. On Sept 3, the search warrant was served and Owusu was charged with possessing cocaine, etc.(ProQuest 2384219264) On Sept 4, another search warrant was executed at Danzig Street and Naod was charged with numerous offences including the attempted murder of Owusu (ProQuest 1038108427). Wow, I'm glad you got me to look for this! I've expanded the paragraph.
• with the four arrests including that of Naod, were they remanded? "throughout the 30 months he was in custody" makes it seem like they were and i'd expect them to be, but it's not made clear
  • They were. It's one of the most serious crimes in the city, these are teenagers without a lot of financial means, and prosecutors made the case that they were extremely violent with a disregard for life. I think most readers would assume they weren't granted bail. I have a source that Mesquito was denied bail ("ApplebyShot") but not for the others. (There might be something at sentencing due to time served.)

• "With time served, he is eligible for parole in 2019" needs update
  • I was thinking of getting rid of that. Parole isn't mentioned for any of the others. Does it go off-topic to follow the perpetrators after their sentencing? (If they do something notable afterwards, they could probably have their own biography articles.) Possible updates:
  • Folorunso Owusu was transferred from the Roy McMurty Youth Centre (where he had been housed since November 2012) to adult prison in July 2019 (Pazzano, Toronto Sun, Danzig shooter moves to adult prison). He was still incarcerated as of October 2020.
  • Nahom Tsegazab admitted to the parole board that he was a gang member (which he had previously denied) and "attracted to easy money"; believing his remorse was sincere, he was granted day parole in March 2020, released to a halfway house. (Pazzano, Toronto Sun, 2020 ProQuest 2383742206) His day parole was extended for another six months that October. (Hunter, 2020 ProQuest 2456105434).

  • Naod Tsegazab (here it gets interesting, but probably off topic): 25-year-old Dean Howlett was fatally shot in West Hill on 12 February 2019, found in a stairwell of an apartment building at 4110 Lawrence Ave E (Galloway Boys turf) around 3 pm. Naod Tsegazab, then 22, was charged with second-degree murder. (ProQuest 2181162493) Police stated that Naod was identified by witnesses and surveillance from security cameras at TCHC Kingston–Galloway, which captured a gunbattle between the two men. Howelett had been armed when he was killed, and had once faced drug charges. Police arrested Naod in a "high-risk takedown" on Highway 401 in mid-Toronto on the evening of 14 February (ProQuest 2181822613)(Driver's wrong turn at border). Naod had been released in January 2018, after serving a seven-year prison sentence for the attempted murder of Owusu. (This doesn't add up to me; though in some reckonings it seems like time incarcerated before the trial counts as double time served against the eventual sentence.) Naod was charged in March 2018 with possession of a bullet and was on bail at the time of the Howlett killing (ref name="PazzanoHistory").

  • The report was commissioned by "the McGuinty government" in 2007, after the 23 May shooting death of Jordan Manners. The problem is that there was an election that year, so there were two McGuinty governments. It seems the report was underway by August, so that'd make it the 38th Parliament of Ontario. Linked.
• see also section seems a bit large, maybe work some of them into text? and Toronto Community Housing is already in body
  • This is one of those sections that accumulates. Removed some and nested them a bit. (This could probably be redone in a nav template, but that's more for a featured topic.)

• maybe you can add an image or two of the local area?
  • I would like your advice on this picture: File:Morningside-Coronation_TCHC_2018.jpg. I'm not really an image person. Unfortunately, at thumbnail size, the trees dominate the picture and you can't really see the place behind them. I haven't put it in the article yet because I don't feel it has a lot of encyclopedic merit. I don't have any prospects of being able to get another picture myself, and I haven't found any free pictures anywhere.
    • i would add it, since for me as non-Canadian it helps add to the mental picture of where this was happening. when i checked the image it had a coordinate disparity warning on it Mujinga (talk) 11:06, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
      • When I used the upload wizard, it prompted for coordinates but didn't give instructions. I mistakenly used positive latitude longitude which placed it in the eastern hemisphere. While I was quickly able to correct this, a bot had already come along and copied the coordinates onto SDC data (whatever that is). The instructions for fixing this problem are insufficient; it says to go to the SDC page but says nothing about what that is or how to find it. I don't really care to learn the intricacies of Commons and am hoping a bot will come along and fix what the other bot did. – Reidgreg (talk) 15:33, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

• Added a sentence on the medical response at Sunnybrook Hospital, citing that institution's magazine Sunnybrook magazine
• Added a bit at the end about a poetry collection and a poetry showcase inspired by the shooting.
• Added from Villegas and others on the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act. I put this in the Rob Ford section (retitled as Disenfranchisement of immigrants) but it may have lost some of its cohesion.
• Added from book Across Boundaries on Toronto Stronger Neighbourhoods Strategy for Kingston–Galloway, in middle of section Background.
• Per mujinjga, expanded on Chester Le shooting and subsequent charges
• Possible expansion on parole of convicted perpetrators. While interesting, I feel that this is probably off topic. See at mujinja's comments.

Added 16 April:

• Added a sentence on a memorial march; I didn't see a good place to fit it topically, so placed it chronologically in the 4th paragraph of Aftermath.
• Added a little on incarceration and parole, when available, in the Convictions section.
• Added some explanatory footnotes for discrepancies in reported shooting victims and the Galloway Boys 'locked away' in 2004 from Project Pathfinder.
